So...

When factions comes out, which side are we gonna choose?

This is what the pre-order manual says about each of them.

_______________________________________________________

Kurzicks:
When the Jade Wind swept through the branches of Echovald Forest, it turned everything to stone. Birds crashed to the forest floor in mid-flight. Deer leaped from the ground as flesh and blood, and came to earth little more than life-like statues. Now, two centuries later, life has cautiously returned to the forest. The Kurzicks were the first to venture back to the forest. There they have adapted to their petrified surroundings and have begun to carve their culture into this new landscape.

To the devout Kurzicks, everything is a sign. a portent of what is to come. They find a divine message in everything they witness. This church-state is ruled by the Council of Nobles, who makes decisions and laws only after receiving councel from the spiritual leaders, known as the Redemptors. Great Houses govern the Kurzicks, ancient families that can trace their origins into Cantha's distant past, and beyond. Today, there are five main houses, two of which are the most powerful and influential. It is common for the Houses to argue among themselves, but when it comes time to fight the Luxons, Kurzicks quickly forget their internal squabbles and focus their hatred on their long-standing enemy. Since Shiro's death and the petrification of the forest, the Kurzicks have built their elaborate homes and cathedrals directly into the fossilized trunks of the enormous trees that make up the forest.

Luxons:
For a scant few seconds, the storm that followed Shiro's death wail roiled the sea, spawning waves that reached hundreds of feet into the air. An instant later, everything was frozen in place, but not because of a sudden cold front-the sea was not turned to ice. It had become solid jade. In order to survive, the Luxons had to adapt to a literally landlocked lifestyle, unable to transport goods to market or even sail to the nearby islands for fresh water. Their merchant ships had become one with the pertified ocean, the currents that took them to far-flung lands were now as still as glass.

The traditionally sea-faring Luxons became nomads sailing on a life-less sea. They contrived ways to adapt their giant ships to the new landscape. They now carry out extensive jade mining operations on the forzen sea, uncovering magical oddities and precious resources made up of the petrified life embedded in the unmoving waves.

Today, the Luxons have grouped themselves into three different clans: the Serpent, the Turtle, and the Crab. To keep order, the Luxons invest authority in their Council of Elders, the ruling body that meets each year to modify and approve the "code" that all the clans will follow for the next twelve months.

Although the clans often battle against one another, this is less about warfare, and more about demonstrating which clan is the strongest and most powerful. These battles are usually fought by each clan's champion, along with that champion's elite guard.

Sounds like the Kurzicks are more religiously oriented, whereas the Luxons are more economically oriented.

Honestly, I'd prefer to wait until after I've experienced a little of the new content before voting in a poll like this. These descriptions are a little brief for me to pick right now. With the more religiously oriented nature of the Kurzicks, I'd like to see if there is anything in their belief that I am uncomfortable with.

Does anyone know how the mechanics of this are going to work? I think the entire guild needs to go with the same faction. Does the guild leader have to set the side?

Hmm....

This is a very interesting topic. I'd encourage everyone to vote on as informed a position as they can, because this is something we will probably have to do as a guild-- if only for the fact that we can do missions as a guild.

However, if each character needs to choose individually, then it doesn't matter since we can each have characters on both sides of the conflict. Do we know whether the choice will be character or account based yet?

What are alliances and how do they work in Guild Wars Factions?

Guilds can join together to form guild alliances. Allied guilds share Alliance chat and can visit each other's guild halls. Alliances can also gain control of cities and towns in Cantha by participating in Alliance Missions, which give them the ability to trigger events and gain access to exclusive areas.

What is a faction? Should I join one?

By aligning with one of two warring factions, alliances can gain and hold territory by participating in Faction Battles. The outcome of these battles influences the progress of the war between the two factions. The current battle lines and indications of the control of cities and towns are always visible on the world map. Guild membership in Guild Wars Factions is extremely appealing and interesting for both cooperative and PvP players. By joining an alliance and achieving success with Alliance Missions, your guild gains control of high-level towns. With that control, guild members acquire access to elite cooperative content. In Factions, the strongest guilds most likely will not be made up exclusively of PvP or cooperative players. The strongest guilds will be a combination of both types of players, and such a combination will result in benefits for all members.

Looks like it's not account or guild based, but rather the entire alliance of guilds chooses a faction...

As for visuals, I don't think they've shown what the races themselves look like (I think they're both human, anyway, though I could be wrong.):
GuildWars.com does have some screenshots of the landscapes of each place though.

Kurzicks, and Echovald Forest:

Not sure what this is, but my guess would be a new Guild Hall

well, I would guess that SoE would form it's own alliance, along with joining up with other christian guilds. to form one big christian alliance... much like the crusades.

My vote: the Kurzicks

I'm going to have to go with Kurzicks, based on the very little we have here. While a jade sea sounds really cool, there's something I really don't like about the Luxons: they remake their law every year. Maybe it's just new treaties or something, but it sounds to me like a bit more than that. I mean, where's the absolute standard?

Plus, the whole idea of selling off all the sea life that turned to jade as curiousities or something is just so creepy, somehow!

Hopefully they will be so inhuman looking that you can't tell male from female.

yup.. I love when you can't tell the difference between guys and girls.
the world should be full of Pats. and emos.

and no, I'm not serious about that

And what? If you answer right, I'll know you're a conspirator trying to break up the guild!

(I voted for Kruziks or whatever because Luxon sounds to Star Trekkish)

Just got the latest issue of Computer Gaming World, which had an add for Factions. It gives a sentence or two on each faction.

The Kurzicks: "In the depths of a petrified forest the Kurzicks make their homes among ornate buildings masterfully crafted from giant petrified trees. A conservative nation, they believe in gentility, nobility, and order."

The Luxons: "Where once they traveled the wild waters of the sea, the Luxons must now traverse the hard expanse of a sea turned to jade. In magical walking machines these nomads move as need requires, relying on strength for survival."

The Kurzicks seem, for now, to be the better choice for us. They seem less warlike, in general, then the Luxons. However, if their religious beliefs involve anything like those of the White Mantle (especially human sacrifice) then I'd be less sure.

At IGN it says "Three nations inhabit the continent of Cantha. The Canthans are the first and were actually part of the original Guild Wars as account storage NPCs. They're a mercantile race led by an Emperor. The Kurzicks are a very religious and reside in a petrified forest and even make their homes out of the trees there. The Luxans [sic] (which really just makes me think of Farscape) are a sea faring race that now uses walking machines to traverse the Jade Sea. They're nomadic and respect strength over all else.

That attitude, that might makes right, especially doesn't endear the Luxons to me.

Man i loved farscape, if you liked that show you should watch some of Firefly. Anyway i vote Kurzicks, better scenery.

I used the "hydra" pic from the fansite materials to make my own desktop. It has one of the petrified cities in the far background. Very cool: go petrified cities!

Firefly is awesome. I own the DVD set. [/offtopic]

I voted for the Kurzicks because they are a religious faction and it just seemed to fit us better than the Luxons. The Luxons had to have been inspired by the Luxon race in Farscape, they're both fierce and strong.
