Is PC/Digital gaming the future?

If onlive had 1080p, I'd bite. I say THAT is the future of gaming. A gaming internet cafe, without leaving your home.

Ohh boy. One computer... about prolly $500-1000 of your dollars a year depending if you want 60fps.
Now if we had the 'standard' 2 kids... and assuming they both game... parents gamers too... all want to play together obviously... outch. 3 or more kids... lets just hope the 3rd one is an outdoors type. Could always share computers but I think gaming is a great family bonding thing... between the kids anyway. We didn't really do MMOs back then but I enjoyed gaming with my sister. Alone can be just sad at times.
I may be a little young to think about this but why would any gamer want to marry a NON GAMER WIFE/Husband?!!! It just doesn't make sense.

Therefore, while 3 subscriptions IS gona hurt, a lot, if we had a 1080, heck at least 720p version of onlive, I'm sure we will see a lot more families gaming together.

Hmm, I put together a computer for < $1000 three years ago and it still hits 60fps on all modern games, and I haven't bought anything hardware wise since (actually technically not true, I had to buy a new processor and mobo due to damage shipping it up to AK, but the replacements were fairly equivalent to what I had). It's all about the research.

Actually that is really a small thing, and gamer is one of those odd categories that sometimes defies definition. My other half's only forays into gaming is odd games of Timez Attack, card games, and several old games we no longer have access to such as Dolphin Speller, Mule, and Wheel of Fortune. She doesn't like to "kill" stuff, and even sometimes gets upset at me for killing stuff, so I try not to use the word. But she is a wonderful person with compassion, intelligence, and good sense of humor, who loves God. So that makes the non-gamer issue of little importance.

My wife hates games and it's the best thing ever. Without her the kids and I would never see the sunshine or do physical activities. It is her input that helps me see past my idol worship of video games and gives great perspective. It also thanks to her that we have zero debt and have a handle on expenses. I am not saying all gamers suffer from poor financial choices and addiction, but I sure do.

One thing I've learned in college. Do you really want to marry yourself?? ;)

idol worship
WUT. Didn't think I'd find someone who thinks games are evil here. Or are you saying it's evil when you get obsessed? Then I agree.

Actually I think it's better not to marry than to have a marriage break up, as I'm saddened and strongly repulsed by divorce. Sure sometimes you just gotta move on when all else fails but you did take oaths and all.

@ursen
Well yeah hardcore gaming is still a male dominated sport, many girls I know play games, in fact almost all @ my generation, but the casual stuff. Really popular in my area is the anime-style free to play games, I call it trash even though I'm an otaku, but still 'games' in definition. Guess those are easier to find eh?

What I'm saying is I get tired of people complaining of 'spouse aggro' and 'soz gtg NOW my wife's unplugging my comp'.
Either they are married to an unreasonable game hater, or seriously in the throngs of addiction, which is unlikely if you've only played a couple hours and he logged in after you, or he's playing another game in which case you really should reconsider having him in your 'hardcore full time core raid team' anyway.
So I really don't see why a hardcore gamer who is obviously NOT prepared to give up his games would enter such a marriage. If she's a great person, a good Christian, why not keep it as that? in the friend zone. Instead of having her pull the plug in the middle of guild activities, or more seriously, end up hurting everyone's feelings.

On the original topic, are you getting 60fps consistently on at least 'high' at 1080p or better?

gaming laptop = huge + $$ + can become outdated
ipad2 = super light + already have + online is always up to date.

OnLive also allows 2 day or 5 day rentals of full games. This allows me to get my fill of new games at a fraction of the cost. I can play them anywhere since I have my iPad with me almost all the time.

I dunno. The only way I see this as being useful is if you lack a gaming PC (which will need to be updated every few years).

Another problem I have been hearing about Onlive is lag. You play it over the internet and your computer or iPad is only functioning as a TV - so you hit A or X (or whatever it is), your computer sends it to the server that is running the game, and it sends it back. There's bound to be lag.

Of course, they've only got 100ish games too... you only have these problems if they have the game you want (I looked through their library and found nothing I wanted to play).

OnLive lag is usually under 120ms, which, according to John Carmack, most consoles have (latency, that is) offline anyways. Problem with OnLive though is the bandwidth caps. I read of a story recently where a guy playing Splinter Cell Conviction for 2 weeks ended up with 80 gigs used. As for gaming, I've been updated my PC every 2-4 years to keep up, I don't find it too expensive at all given one's employed. If gaming is a hobby, I see no reason to skimp on it.

Hmm bandwidth caps is no good..
As for lag, I have read a grip of reviews that all say the lag is no different then a console. Finding a way around lag IS the business model they are staking their claim on, so I would imagine they got some secret sauce there.

As for being my main system, yeah I got a nice gaming rig so there would be no reason not to play there. but for portable gaming this is amazing, and for playing PC games on the HDTV in the other room from my pc its pretty hawt too.

The library is meh right now, but if it were to take off I will totally subscribe.

But so is console gaming.
RAGGGEEEE!!!

As for latency, I'd be happy if it's under 200. Seriously, at this corner of the world, 300s is common.
And yes it's basically PC gaming with a cheap pc, all you gotta worry about is having a half decent screen and last generation CPU and GPU. Anything that can watch HD vids should be fine right? Now they just gotta make it 1080p HD and they would have sold me in.
All details ultra and 16x AA please.

The thing is, like we discussed before, one computer is easy. When everyone under one roof wants to party up, that's when it's gona cost.
