ok at moment we have 2 isps for 56k (aol and reachone long story) my folks are thinking of canceling aol becuase we are no longer able to get it for free (reason for long story) but the proplem is that reachone disconnects me every 10 min or so when i play CS, its fine with any other game just not hl or any of its mods. now ur saying get dsl or cable... cant dsl wont come to my house and my dad doesnt like the idea of cable not having any filters (hence the reason of reachone)... any ideas?

needs or requests please don't hesitate to email us at sales@reachone.com or call us at 1-888-820-7559. You are important to us!
Sounds like here is a great place to start troubleshooting your problem. I got it from their website. CS.

I have cable, and depending on what you dad means by "filters" (does he mean filters that prevent you from going to bad sites, or filters that prevent hackers/viruses from coming to your computer? [which is called a firewall])

The problem with DSL/Cable is that once you turn on your computer...you are ALWAYS on. Which leaves an open gateway to Hackers, Viruses, and Spyware to just waltz right in and make their home on your computer. The solution (which I suggest EVERY computer gets that has DSL/Cable) is to purchase a firewall program that prevents other people on the internet from having access to your computer.

I suggest a Firewall called "Zone Alarm Pro."It costs $39.99 and you have to renew the subscription every year...but IT'S WORTH IT. Of course, Windows XP comes with their own Firewall, but its VERY easy to get by...

Let me tell you a story, we have 3 computers at our hows (2 laptops and 1 desktop) and 2 of them have Zone Alarm Pro...The other is owned by my brother who only wants to invest in his Car and Video Games for his computer (forgets that a good Firewall is a good investment in keeping his computer running) Well His laptop is "supposedly" faster than the Desktop (more Ghz, More RAM, more everything)...except it lags SO BAD during any online game... Well, we ran a free Pest Patrol and he had OVER 100 Spyware Cookies bogging down his computer... My laptop had none, and the Desktop also had none... So Zonealarm (cooperating with Pest Patrol) prevents ANY viruses, hackers, or Spyware from getting on the computer...

A good Web filter is called Cybersitter if they are worried about you going to bad sites...

It seems to me that your parents are...errr... "economical" at best, so it's going to be tough trying to persuade them to go DSL/Cable and getting them to purchase Zone Alarm Pro, Pest Patrol and Cybersitter... but it is always worth a try...

Just a quick comment here.......

We have Cable here at the house, and Beowulf is right that it is always on.  The only thing that he didn't mention is that in most cases, you have to buy a modem, which generally they have a switch to turn them into "standby" mode or whatever, where nothing gets through, but you can still have your computer on.  Its sorta like disconnecting while using dialup!

I also recommed everything Beowulf did. I personally use Norton Internet Security, mostly because it comes with my anti-virus software, etc....but I also can configure A LOT of stuff. I'm not sure about ZoneAlarm, but I know that you can set different users up on the firewall as different levels, like "adult" "teenager"...etc

Then you just set up sites that each category can't go to. Then you make everyone in your family have a different login....

of course....that's much easier with only one computer. You could also buy a router with a firewall in it.....

I'll zip it now....I could go on forever!

well by filter it means bad websites (neither have i privately or publically broken this trust) and he believes i can just override the cybersitter or whatever program he uses (which indeed i can just as anyone). and i will check with reachone on that, thats a good idea. and i useally just run spyware scanners n whatnot so my desktop is uesally good against that stuff with 56k

ok possible solution, reachone has a thing called speedwire and i might get my parents to spring for it, just have to wait till dad comes home from work >_<

Not to belittle you or anything, but that is an absolutely ridiculous statement. A software firewall is not a catch all. If it were that easy to keep out hackers, they wouldn't be breaking into corporate networks that spend millions every year on security. Appropriate security involves both hardware and software solutions, and quite honestly, is probably more expensive than any of us can really afford. Granted, you can use These consumer grade software firewalls to keep out most script kiddies, if someone wants into your computer, and all you have is Zone, Norton, McAfee, etc... They can get in. The only thing that protects most people from those types is that you really don't have anything they want to put forth the effort to get at ;).

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy a firewall or anything, certainly something is better than nothing, but you also need to be aware that it really can't stop ALL of anything. If you have a router, firewall, intrusion detection system, and monitor the traffic going through your ports, it will help you batten down the hatches more effectively, and get people off of your machine who are already there. But it won't make you 100% safe from attacks, but it will keep out people who only do it for fun :P

*Steps down off of soap box*

i kinda doubted those did ALL thjat and a bag of chips but still...

Then again, Major Coorparations are a higher target then little old me... Who has more money to hack? Definetly not me! Zonealarm is perfect for Home computers because it prevents the non-professional hackers and all the spyware from coming on to home computers... OF COURSE a professional hacker could hack through Zonealarm...but the professional hacker has "bigger fish to fry..." like huge corporations who have millions of dollars.

You understand what Im saying? The Huge Coorparations are not spending millions of dollars to prevent the same type of hackers and spyware that we are spening $40 to prevent... They're spending the millions on the professional hackers.

or you just irk the wrong person and bye bye computer.

I use NIS and perfer it over Zonealarm

I personally delt with too many ZA customers while doing internet tech support to like it or even consider recommending it.

well i have the reachone speedwire now and actually downloads and surfin the web are alot faster, only thing is... it doesnt affect CS nor does it help my connection while playing CS

it is most likely accelerator tech... basicly stores a larger cookies and starts to download files as soon as you click on the link, even while you are waiting to save/ say yes to the download.
