So my Internet connection was working flawlessly for months and then I started getting random packet loss--nothing severe, but enough to drop a connection on a co-op Monster Strike game or cause rubberbanding in FPS games like Team Fortress 2.
I went so far as to replace my router (which had been working just fine, but I wanted to upgrade to gigabit ethernet connections anyway), but that didn't solve the problem.
Two Mediacom techs have come out so far (one to assess the situation, one to adjust levels and supposedly resolve the issue--he/she didn't resolve the issue).
When I run constant pings to my router, my cable modem, and an external address (in this case, 4.2.2.2), I get packet loss from my desktop computer to and from my cable modem and to and from the external address. I get zero packet loss to and from my router.
Is it possible that my cable modem went bad? If so, I would think it would still be under warranty as I purchased it less than a year ago.
Or is it more likely that it's an issue on Mediacom's side? The first tech said he could see some problems with the levels (I forget the exact terminology but he used the analogy of "a fat man wearing a girdle--it works, but it ain't pretty"), but the second tech who allegedly adjusted the levels didn't fix the problem.
If it was just a run-of-the-mill networking problem, I'd probably have already clearly identified and fixed it, but this issue is driving me bonkers. My Internet connection is growing steadily more unreliable and the third Mediacom tech won't be out to our house until Tuesday (I know, I know, less than 48 hours, but this issue is really aggravating).
What do you all think?
