"Inconvenient Truth" and incovenient fallacy?

Yay! I learned something from the CGA forums

Speaking of the nobel peace prize, I can't believe that he was awarded it! Actually, with our world in the state that it's in, I can believe it. It's really sad that he was awarded it instead of Irena Sendler, who was also up as a possibility for the award.

I did not know that. It only compounds my dislike of Al Gore. Even if I believed in what Al Gore says about global warming comparing it to what Irena did is not fair. It is similar to the mixed up idea people have about what constitutes a "hero" these days. If a person works to save himself he may be considered brave, but, he is not a "hero". A hero is someone who actually risks their welfare in the defense of others when they profit nothing by the act. I can definitively state were I in Al Gore's shoes (and I Thank God I am not) I would have refused such a prize if I knew someone like Sendler was in the running. I wonder how many of the 180 other nominees did important things we will never know about. I also wonder how long it will take them to make a movie on Sendler, It just screams for it.

P.S. If anyone is worried about offending The Gerbil it is just not going to happen (the opposite is much more likely as I have a perfectionist zeal when pursuing the truth of a debate). I have my faults, but, I do not offend easy... well unless you insult my parents, but, I'm certain that won't happen here. :)

Sorry if I'm a little late to the discussion...

I'm just curious, but, with China and other nations getting more industrialized has anyone ever calculated the day we will just plain run out of oil? By run out I mean the point where oil is so hard or expensive to get change is forced.

This is actually something that alarms a number of people and has given rise to the idea of "Peak Oil" gaining popular attention. The gist is that there is only so much oil on the planet. It's a finite resource, not infinite. It will run out one day. Peak Oil theory predicts that this running out will be a crash rather than a slow trickle of fumes.

Just like you said, we'll eventually get to a point where we're actually expending more energy to find and extract oil from the ground than the energy we gain from the resource, creating an energy deficit. We're currently using up energy at such a speed that as oil becomes harder to get out of the earth, we won't be able to sustain that lifestyle, and a sharp downturn in energy available from oil will occur. (Wikipedia link explaining more)

The idea of Peak Oil has been floating around for a while, but with China and India ramping up their energy requirements (and economic development increasing in Africa), it becomes more relevant. Not only will the world's nations need more oil, they'll need to get it out of the ground faster in order to feed demand. And in the nations that have these resources, we'll see continued conflict over whatever's left and no peace. (see the Middle East and the conflict in Darfur, where China has relations with the government in power and will use it's veto on any UN peace-keeping initiatives)

Whether you believe in global warming or not, it seems quite clear (to me at least) that the world needs to find another drug. Heck, even if you don't believe that, getting off of oil makes sense from a "homeland security" perspective, as you guys have already mentioned.

I don't think oil will run out any time soon. Currently, the oil is already very difficult to get out in some instances, but R&D goes in to making it easier. I may be wrong, but I believe there's still a TON of oil in the artic areas and Alaska, so I don't see Earth running out of oil until we have gravity as our primary propulsion method.

You are right, there is oil in the arctic, and sadly, thanks to Global Warming, it's going to be easier to get to. Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the US have been sending expeditions above and below the water to stake out their claim of the arctic booty. A Russian sub recently planted a tiny flag on the arctic seabed. (Time magazine article)

I find it sad and horrifying that as polar bear populations begin to dwindle, the Inuit way of life becomes threatened, and large city-sized chunks of Greenland and the North Pole break away and dissolve, the world's nations can only think of exploiting the situation for economic and political gain.

I know that there were recently pollution restrictions proposed which would have brought us in line with other countries THEORETICALLY SLOWING (I emphasize theory and slow not stop or reverse) global warming by 0.something percent (can't remember number, but, it was definitely 0.something, in other words negligible). What it would have done though is hurt our economy making any lasting change I.E. switching energy sources much harder.

You raise an interesting point, one that some environmentalists are starting to pick up on (Time magazine link): basically it's already too late, so we better start using whatever resources we have left (money, time, political will, ingenuity, energy) to deal with the coming environmental disasters and find energy alternatives, rather than spending time trying to reverse the damage we've already caused.

Mhm, interesting way to look at it. i agree with #1, #2 and #3 but i must say i disagree with #4. it is your civic duty to vote, and i think it is godly to protect your country from being ruled by tyrants.

America has to fall sometime...the Anti-Christ will rule from the Middle East as a world power...so we have to fall sometime...

...and I could care less about "Civic Duty"...

I'll be blunt -- that's the stupidest logic I have ever heard. With the same reasoning, I'm just going to sit here in my dorm room on my hands because God already knows what I'm going to become in life. It's already predetermined! So I'll be LAZY and not do a single thing about it. God already knows, so I don't care...

I won't try to cheer up one of my friends who has cancer because whether she lives or dies has already been predetermined. God already knows, so I don't care...

Your reasoning makes me SO MAD. By your words, you're simply saying that prayer is useless. Why should we pray if everything is going to happen the same way anyways? Why should I preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ? -- It has already been predetermined who will be saved. God already knows, so I don't care...

Someone is in my front yard digging giant holes. I don't want them, but I'm not going to go tell him to stop because it's predetermined if he will or not. God already knows, so I don't care...

I bet right now you're thinking of replying to this message. But it has already been predetermined if you will or not -- so I guess it's useless to do anything. God already knows, so I don't care...

Shame on you.

When America falls, do you think that will be a good thing? Do you think people are going to turn to Christ? If you don't vote, what if a left wing nut becomes president. He says everyone should do what they want, and that there should be restrictions on religion. Is that a GOOD thing for Christ? No, we need to get His message out there. Such restrictions would hurt the spreading of his word and would cost the lives or freedoms of many Christians. By not voting, you're just encouraging this country to head into a downward spiral. You're hurting people. You're hurting the Faith.

I think xion tawa just needs to rethink what he said. i very much so disagree with him though...just be easy on him.

To that I reply:

God said:
Galatians 2:11 "When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearaly in the wrong."

Sorry XionTawa if I came out a little strong, but I can't help but completely disagree with you. I'm opposing you with love, not with sin.

Sqweak! = Cheer up!

The fact that we know how it is all going to end doesn't mean we know when it's going to happen. In fact Jesus didn't even know "Mark 13:31-33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is". This illustrates how predestination and free will coexist. From Gods perspective he already knows what's going to happen no matter if we act or don't act. However, because we can never know "when" from man's perspective we can postpone these things from happening by our choices and thus save more people in that time. There would also be no point in God giving prophecy to begin with if it was not going to effect our choices and help bring us to act in accordance with God's will. Inaction becomes unacceptable when you consider what God's will is "Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Also remember part of the reason behind prophecy being given is so we can take heart from the fact that God has won the war so we DON'T get discouraged from fighting battles that seem hopeless. So don't become jaded we can make a difference! :)

This has been a very interesting conversation, i guess i should come out of SoE forums more often..

I'd like to applaud all of you for being very mature about this discussions, very controversial topics and so far no one has seemed to go overboard or take any major offense, very Christ-like guys. GJ

on a more on-topic note (cause we are so good at that :p)
first off i believe that God created the heavens and the Earth in 7 literal days and that Adam was the first man. Micro-evolution is a SCIENCE, it has been studied and proven. Macro-Evolution is a RELIGION as well as every other evolution (theres 6, 5 of them happen to be religions tho.) There is NO evidence for evolution, there is a $250,000 reward online for anyone to give any real proof for evolution and its been there for about 10 years now. No one has claimed it.
Secondly: About politics, the church needs to be in the state, and the state OUT of the church. We as The Church need to make the state holy by voting, as i am under 18 i cannot help in that way but there are still ways of helping the nation, for people over the age of 18 they not only should, but NEED to vote to make our nation better. Its a preety safe bet to say that America is the most influential country in the world. About right now there are only 24-35% of the population as Bible believeing Christians. We need to keep this % stable and make it increase, and the only way to do that is A) Target the teens of this generation and try and get them to Christ or B) Get a holy man (or woman) into office or a place of power. Slowly we are losing our rights given to us by the consitution. There is a new law now that will be passed that you cannot smoke in your our house. Now let me get this clear im all for that law however it is private property and you should be able to do what you want. What are they going to do now? Take away eating at the dinner table? Slowly they are taking away our rights and they are doing it on purpose. I also believe that they want to start killing of a lot of people. The New World Order wants to make the human population maintained at half a billion people. WE CANT EVEN MAINTAIN 6+ BILLION PEOPlE! How can we maintain half a billion?! Well, could possibly GMOs (Geneticly Modified Orangisims) be rigged to not help, but kill? In Europe they banned all GMO foods and ironicly half the population stopped getting certain lethal deseases. (like SIDS).

anyway, i guess i could be done for now. Again great job on the conversation guys! Sorry if i went off topic at all, i just wrote down what came to my head.

God Bless guys!

Okay, first...Offense is the bait of Satan, and I did not mean to offend you...

I feel no reason to vote, I am not motivated to vote, so I will not...how I said that didn't come out like I wanted to in my previous post...You want some honesty??? Yes, I am lazy, and yes I do not care...and I am working on it...But it is the truth, everything has been set since the beginning of creation...but I do understand your argument and DO NOT disagree with you...(I have just gotten home from work and my brain is a little tired)...But I would like to point out something I do disagree with in what you said, (not to offend you...)...Why cheer up a friend with cancer, if you can use your faith and the power of God to HEAL their cancer??? ...and remember, there is a reason for EVERYTHING...and...actually, I am done for now...I will await for your next post...but I am tired and sick of typing...

Your brother in Christ Jesus,
Sean

I happen to be a realist (yeah, I know, not very good for a follower of Christ to be...), so I tend to be pessimistic about many things, especially the future of America and the "end-times"... I understand this could be considered something I need to work on, and I have been, so please understand why I think the way I do...or try at least...but I do not expect anyone to understand...I tend to not make sense of anything anyways...

I am sorry for the problems I have caused...

Lol Xion, your last three post were all in 4 minute intervals.

Back to the original post.

Under the Bush administration, governmental scientists were told to destroy their work dating back to a certain time, I would be more apt to believe what Gore is saying than anything out of the Bush administration. And what if Global Warming is not caused by greenhouse gases, which are byproducts of internal combustion engines and the burning of coal for energy? Would you like to do nothing to fix the smog that consumes all of our major cities? Would you sit around idle, and let people's health deteriorate due to the poor air quality?

How can you assault a man who is trying to better the environment? Do you know how long he has been at this? Longer than most of the posters here have been alive.
