I picked out my own ring and am happy that I did. I found that it was a fun and bonding experience to hunt for the right ring with my future husband. If the girl easily gets trapped into needing the biggest and best ring though that might not be a good option. You want to select the ring with the best value not necessarily the biggest one. I think of all the traits of the diamond the one to focus on is the cut. Even a lower clarity and color can shine with the right cut.

BTW if you wanna hear an awesome proposal story ask me :)

If you intend to get a diamond make sure you go through them all. My father told me that when he was buying my mother's ring he took the time to look through the diamonds and select the best one of the grade he was buying. Of course after he had gone though all the effort to find the best diamond he had to argue with the sales person because then they said it should have been rated 2 grades higher and wanted to charge him more -_- (he won out though).

yep, I know her ring size already... I had her try on my ring cause my hands are so much bigger and then the conversation went into "wow you have small hands... what size are your fingers??" my pinky is a 11... thats why i asked about her sizes, hehe... got the question out without any suspicions... and this was weeks ago...

I have heard her talking before about what she likes when one of her friends got engaged as far as the ring in concerned...

I have a pretty good idea what the ring I will get her is going to look like and i know 100% how I would propose/am gonna propose if things work out.

but i would LOVE to hear the stories, please... feel free to send me a private message with your stories! Would be nice to hear... and encouraging!

I am going to upstate new york where her family lives at the end of september, I think I am going to ask her dad at that point for permission, and then from there... i will have a couple of months to let my plan fully unfold.... mwahahaha!

Woot! Lots of great advice and suggestions here. Romance can be done without a lot of cost if thought out. Dollar Store sells very nice 'fake' rose petals..... and I've even seen some inexpensive champagne glasses, dim lights or candles and even plastic looks romantic. You'll always remember that night, even if you laugh over how little you were able to spend, it will always be special. Don't ever loose the romance, even if you have to make an effort to keep it going, girls like that sort of stuff (and men don't so it's something you have to work at after 3-5 years of marriage)

Congrats on having a friend become your future wifey.
