ok so I was having issues and then i found i had a bad IDE cable. but now even after formatting, low level formatting, etc, windows xp installer keeps restarting and basically after the DMI pool it just goes straight to cd boot, skipping the hard drive. So im not sure what else to do or try.

no thats the weird thing. i have no clicking no nothing. when i had xp working according to speedfan my hard drive was in very good condition too. so im really baffled

Check the drive Slave/Master settings?

Sounds odd for a HDD to do that. I would wonder if its something connecting not the HDD itself.

I have had the actual controller go bad on me before. Try plugging it in a different machine and see if it has any issues.

well VK you just might be right. i started the xp install process with the drive in my linux box and it was plugging away just fine. and then through it back in my case and back at square one... i dont know what to do though.... its an IDE drive...

PCI IDE controllers are dirt cheap.

but my cd-rom is working just fine. i logged into linux live and backed up my hd to my network

each channel is it's own controller. so one hdd controller is dead and the other one works fine. Get a pci ide card and use that for your cd-rom and put your hdd on the cd-rom drive's channel and boot from there.

woot i found a ide cable thingy from my 5gb swap machine and so im trying to see how that will work. but would it just be easier to give my 200gb ide to my linux machine and then just order a sata drive?

edit: windows install BSODs O_O
