in the song we all know and love called "Bingo", is bingo the name of the dog or the farmer?

Lyrics:

"There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o!"

Technically, it didn't say that Bingo was the name of the dog. It even seems, depending on how you look at it, like the song is leaning towards the fact that the famer (Bingo) had a dog. I wonder....
