I think I'm ready to play a SRPG/TRPG now

I've gone about as far as I can go into the JRPG niche. I think it's time I finally take the plunge and play a strategy/tactical RPG.

I have a Playstation 1, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Gameboy Advance, DS Lite, and, of course, PC. My DS Lite is currently in for repairs; I'm hoping to receive the repaired unit some time next week.

Given the choice of platforms, what game should I choose as my first SRPG? I'm leaning toward Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1 or one of the FFT titles for the GBA or DS.

Suggestions?

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but these are all turn based tactic RPGs...

Romance of the Three Kindoms all the way... if you're a Chinese History buff like me. I've played just about every one of the series (currently at 11, except for one or two that weren't US releases, cuz I can't read Chinese/Japanese)

Personal Favorites:

ROTK 3
ROTK 6
ROTK 7
ROTK 9

by far I played 7 and 9 the most.

Another History based SRPG is Nobunaga's Ambition. I've played the first version (NES) and loved the game, can be hard to start, but definitly good. I have high hope for the lastest PS2 release as I've yet to get it.

ROTK, in any iteration, may be too complex for a first SRPG. Then again, I haven't actually played through any of the titles yet. I always thought that ROTK was the final evolution of the SRPG, not the entry point.

Then again, I could be wrong. ROTK VIII has the highest score on Metacritic. I might try to find a copy on the cheap.

On a related note, what do you all think is the best SRPG for the DS? It'd be nice to have a SRPG to take on the go.

Not sure what all the 4 letter things mean, but have you checked the Wii release schedule. I am sure any RPG to get Wii'd would be much simplified and a good entrance.. I might even try it with you if you find a good one.. I cant do RPG usually.. The last one i played was Space Crusade on the Commodore 64.. And that was more turn-based, not RPG

If you are thinking of ROTK series, 7 is definitely the one to start with. You can just be a officer of the kingdom instead of the ruler and you don't have near the amount of decisions to make as an officer. Then you can work up to ruler when you are comfortable with the controls. Personally, I love 9, it's all on one map so you can follow everyone's movements easily. Being experienced in the games, I know who is hard to play and who is easy... and for the beginner, always stick with the big three; Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and the Sun Family (Sun Quan). But, you are right Tek, Romance of the Three Kingdoms can be intensive for the novice, but the learning curve isn't too steep (specially for someone like you)

I would totally say go the FFTA route. That game is pretty awesome and has like 100+ hours. Or pick up a PSP and get some decent titles on that (Jean D'arc, FFT:War of the Lions).

So watch for RTK 7 and 9. Got it.

I remembered that I had a save game 30 minutes into Dragon Quest VIII and loaded it up tonight. I was reminded how terrific and polished the game looks. DQ8 is one of the best uses of cel shading in a game I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, DQ8 also features random encounters. After recently finishing one of the best RPGs in recent years--and one with no random encounters--I'm having second thoughts about playing through DQ8 right now.

As much as I love Final Fantasy VI (and anyone who's been around for at least a few months probably knows), the reason I haven't played through the game again in the last few years is solely because of the random encounter mechanic.

So, back the topic at hand: It looks like I'll be watching to pick up RTK 7 and 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

EDIT: Maybe by the time I finish one of those titles, Disgaea DS will be out in the US. It's one of the few "essential RPGs" I've never played through, but now I'm going to wait until it comes out on the DS to check it out.

I've enjoyed the Fire Emblem series on the GBA immensely. I've played Fire Emblem to completion (working my way through an alt story line still) and I'm still working on Sacred Stones.

From a game mechanic standpoint, the game is relatively easy to get into. There's a simple rock-paper-scissors system in place for both melee and magical attacks. For example, Axes are strong against Lances, Lances strong against Swords, Swords strong against Axes. There are also special weapons that reverse this orientation, or have other special properties (good against armored foes, good against cavalry, etc.) but everything is clearly marked out in the name of the weapon (ex. a lance named Axereaver) or quickly accessible using in game help. The quality of the weapons is also indicated by the descriptor of the weapon: Slim Sword, Iron Sword, Steel Sword, Silver Sword, etc.

The game is very clear, I think, about what items do what in the game, so you don't have to sift through the attributes of each one in order to figure out which is the best to equip. Also, there's no armor/gear system either, which in my books is a bonus. (I'd rather be planning strategy than managing my team's gear)

What I love most about the games are the stories and the characters. The main plot line in both games is really good and well scripted. You really end up coming away caring about what happens to the characters (especially because if you lose one, they're gone forever unless you restart the mission from the beginning). There's a relationship system in the game as well that fleshes out the characters too, and can change the endings in the game depending on how far you progress with those relationships.

There's a Fire Emblem DS game in development but no release date announced. FE also has games on the Gamecube and Wii, but I found that I enjoyed FE best in short to long bursts on a portable system while commuting on the subway or riding a train home. Sitting on the couch and playing it didn't feel the same.

I also really love the Advanced Wars series. I've played Advanced Wars 2 on the GBA (again, currently working playing it through the second time on a new difficulty setting) and I'm working my way through the new Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin. (Apparently AW:Dual Strike is one of the best games to have on the DS)

Advanced Wars is more of a pure strategy game than an RPG - in the new game, units can level up 3 times, but that doesn't carry over from mission to mission. However again, the stories and characters in both games are awesome and the strategy gaming is quality.

Another simple system at work here, rock-paper-scissors, but lots of little details that give units certain specific roles to play.

Both games were designed by Intelligent Systems, incidental.

I'm all about the story and characters. I'll see if I can give Fire Emblem and Advance Wars for the GBA a whirl.

I may also rent Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for the Wii with my next free rental at Hollywood Video (since they refuse to carry No More Heroes and Okami).

Well if you can find them. Uncharted Waters 1 and 2 were awesome. I love all the old KOEI games. Rise of the Phoenix, Ghegis Khan 2 Clan of the Grey Wolf, Liberty or Death, All of those I believe are NES or SNES games. Simple but were really fun.

FINALLY someone who knows what I am talking about. Your the first person I know that knows the Ghegis Kahn Series!!!
