How to disable Blizzard's Real ID

This is a very quick How-To on disabling the RealID function in game.

If you are not aware, if you have RealID enabled, an addon or scripts can grab your RealID info. Disabling RealID stops this from happening.

1. Go to https://us.battle.net/login/login.xml and log in.
2 . Under Manage My Games, click on the Parental Controls link.

If you HAVE Parental Controls already enabled, skip down to #9, otherwise:

3. Click the "No - Set up Parental Controls Now" button.
4. Enter your Battle.Net login under "Child's Battle.net Account Name"
5. Enter your Battle.Net password under "Child's Battle.net Account Password"
6. Enter your Battle.Net email under "Parent's Email Address" and "Confirm Parent's Email Address".
7. Click on "Set Up Parental Controls"
8. You will get an email verification with a link in it to complete the setup. Click the link.

9. Go to the link that was provided in your Parental Controls email.
10. Make sure the "Enabled RealID" checkbox is NOT checked.
11. Click "Save Settings"

Congratulations, RealID is now disabled for your Battle.Net account for in-game access.

This is a good fix, and I've done it already, but I think most of the uproar is that people now cannot use the forums, and they foresee it taking over other parts of the game

You can /tinfoilhat me all you want, but I don't like the direction Blizzard has been going and I've been saying so for a long time... sad because the game changes for Cataclysm look really cool. I hope I can stick around long enough to see them, but if these trends go much further, I see myself hunting for a new game.

How long until Star Wars again?

Yes, and would it be lieing if you are not a child? As a Christian are we ok with that? Unlike Liberty U I am not fond of lieing.

Interestingly enough I was wondering the same thing - is the source of this how to disable directly from Blizzard - if it is then I am ok with that - if not, well it does seem to advocate dishonesty.

I am not hurling accusations here - I am just wondering aloud because I think when something is new - we need to ask questions in order to make sure we are upholding our integrity as believers.

(imma double-post)

I have to admit, I do this ALL the time. Look at those "age checks" for video games in steam where they ask you your birthday. Do you put in your REAL BIRTHDAY? LOL I just scroll to the nearest low year so I can get to the game page.

So is aberration of data a bad thing to a corporation? If you want to get biblical we could pull up Abraham and his lying about Sarah as his sister. Why did he do it? God allowed Abraham and his family to be blessed through that lie. I think he did it to protect his family.

I have always wondered about the commandment that says "not to bear false witness AGAINST your neighbor", but does that mean lying about your birthday? Food for thought.

I never stated to Blizzard that I had a child, and Blizzard never said parental controls may not be used by people without children.

So I'm ok with it.

I am not playing a blizzard game so it doesn't apply to me but I would have zero problem with using the parental controls. In this situation it is hardly the same as lying in my opinion and besides the fact that I think it would be worse for me to be hung up on it, more like a Pharisaical/works based thing then having freedom in Christ.

I don't think you can use the - its legalism to care about this - argument. Let me state very clearly this is nothing to do with Ewoksrule, but the content of the statement made.

Too many much needed conversations get shut down by the use of the accusation of Pharisaical attitudes.

True legalism by Biblical definition is depending upon your adherence to the law for salvation. I think the term legalism has been hijacked to shut down conversations and if anything say that my way is right yours is wrong and if you disagree you are simply a legalist.

In the case of this issue it is a question of ethics that should be resolved with proper thought and discussion because it affects all of us in the game.

Point taken and I am not offended. However, you are using your own logic against your self here. Many conversations like this need to have mentioned "works righteousness". It is proper thought and discussion and quite appropriate for this ethics based conversation. You trying to shut my statement down is just as wrong as if I was trying to shut the conversation down, which I was not.

Any time we talk about minutia like "using parental controls on a video game account to protect privacy vs dishonesty" we need to bring up if we are making decisions based on grace or the law.

I used words like "i think" and "my opinion" and "for me" Those are not words that are about shutting down a conversation, those are words of a brother conversating with you and giving you what the Spirit is working on in his life.

Now I do agree that people use the situation you mentioned to fight you vs me = legalism, but if you reread my post I think you would find I did not do that here.

I think it is far better than other options I know people are/were considering (such as changing the name on the account to something that is inaccurate - it's against the TOS).
