My computer cd player was working fine a few days ago. Now it will pull pictures and play the cd but without sound. If I play something from the Internet, the sound is working fine. I have tried a few obvious things, from making certain the sound is not muted, to reinstalling the sound drivers. Please help!!
 
I'll take a stab at it.

Do the following:

Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Volume Control

This will bring up your Volume Control. Make sure that 'CD Audio' is not muted and move the volume slider up.

Note: These instructions are assuming you are using Windows XP and that you have 'CD Audio' listed on your Volume Control by default.

If this doesn't help or you have problems with the instructions, please let me know.

Thank you, I appreciate it...but, that doesn't seem to be the problem. I am using Windows 2000 Professional, but I found the place you were leading me.
 
Maybe the cable that connects your cd player to your soundcard poped out. I'm not sure how this could happen unless u moved or droped your comp, but it is a posibility.
Also check for new drivers, or different drivers. I googled it and some people with win 2000 had driver problems with their soundcard.

A friend from the forums walked me through putting in a sound card. I remember it fit into a slot, but no cable that I can remember. I used the Yamaha drivers that came with the sound card. It is so odd that it has worked beautifully for about a month. I did try to download the Windows Patch, (dumb move since I was not having any issues with Windows), and that may be when it stopped working. The patch never downloaded completely due to this slow dial up. I was thinking that could have somehow messed things up, and that was the reason I reinstalled the drivers. I will check for the cable and see if I can google some updated drivers. Thank you, Gandhi.

Yea there has to be a cable that connects your cd player to your sound card. I don't think u could get sound from your cd rom if it didn't. But since u said u used to get sound it should be on there.
 
That cable is only for digital Cd rom sound, its not needed to play sound, thats done through the soundcard.
 
Cables seem to be in order. This computer was built by my son-in-law, now in the Seattle area. I added the sound card. I need to look for a driver still. I bought a cheapy with no hint of the company, except the cd for the drivers, ect., does have Yamaha on it WS099 drivers and utilities. But I am wondering, if it was working, and it continues to work via net, would the drivers be an issue?

Most of the time Real Play takes over. However, from the net, it is a combination of the three depending from where I download. Windows Media, Real Player, or AOL whatever it is called! It seems trying to play from cd on the computer, Real Player is picking it up.
 
Have u tried going in to media player and playing a cd.

Sound card compatibility
Click Settings... to modify sound card settings to overcome common audio problems with older sound cards.

Disable 16-bit sound: (use 8-bit only)
Use this setting if you have an older sound card and clips sound scratchy or distorted.

Disable custom sampling rates:
Use this setting if clips play at the wrong speed or sound scratchy or distorted

I'mhaving problems with my real player and have to reinstall it but this is what I found in the help section if u have sound quality problems. U might want to play with those settings and see if anything changes.

Well, the Windows Media is working, thank you, thank you, thank you! Real Player wants to take over so I need to figure that one out in its preferences. Now Real Player will play an MP3 format, but not a regular CD. I must keep real player because a few of my favorite preaching sites use that for their player!
Next question, where can I find those old favorite Christian music tunes at no charge? And yes, I intend to be honorable about it, just want to find the ones that I like, listen to them before purchasing them.
