Hit and Miss

Last week I was cutting the grass on my riding lawnmower. I was cutting under some trees and all of a sudden I hit a bump, looked up and took a branch right in the eye. I suffered a tear that put me out of commission for the last several days.

Needless to say even as I write this I am still in pain. Praise God the damage did not affect my vision in the long term, but it was enough damage to affect my ability to preach on Sunday.

Life doesn't always go perfectly, and sometimes we take a big whack in the old eyeball, sometimes we don't.

Yet should that change my attitude towards the Lord? Until last night I have been cranky towards my family, and sure I could blame it on the pain, but the truth is my heart was filled with sin.

I have been given a new life in Jesus Christ. He foreknew me, He predestined me, He called me, He justified me, and He glorified me (Romans 8:29-30). I have been bought with the precious blood of Christ. Jesus is my treasure.

I repented of my sin before the Lord, and asked my family to forgive me for my bad attitude. Immediately I felt the weight of sin fall off, and a sense of renewed joy came flooding back in to my heart.

I know some people like to pretend that the Christian life is perfect and without struggles, but we are indeed sinners saved by grace, through faith, and not of ourselves (Ephesians 2:8-9).

So whether in life it's a hit or a miss (literally or metaphorically) let your heart be right before God, because you rightly view Him for who He is, and you too will find the joy of the Lord!

1 Peter 1:8 - Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
