Hardware question about multiple drives

My daughter's PC has 2 hard drives in it....both IDE

Can I hook up a slave drive that is SATA w/ an IDE master?

Or will I have to reformat and just install windows 7 on the SATA and use that alone?

I believe all you have to do is plug in the sata, go to the bios on boot up. Go to the boot options and tell the computer to first attempt to boot from the IDE master.
