gunz online

After seeing this thread, I decided to dig through my file archives and install an old version of GunZ. After installing, I ran the GunzLauncher.exe and quickly updated my client. The update and registration processes were quick and painless. The names "Tek," "Tek7," and "Amasa" (my usual moniker for a first-time character) were all taken, so I created a character named "Gudlaug." Character creation options were limited to four hair types, four face types, and character type (weapon loadout).

I found the controls to be quite fluid and responsive. The ability to dive with a double-tap of the W, A, S, or D keys was rather spiff and reminded me of The Opera, an excellent but underappreciated Half-Life 1 mod. The weapons were plain, but they were refreshingly accurate after many a frustrating round of Counter-Strike. There was no lag during the match, either, which was surprising for a free game.

I played for about five minutes then left the server with 10 kills and 2 deaths. I didn't think I was doing that well, but it boosted my self-confidence a fair deal when someone called me a "hacker." w00t!

I don't know how much replay value the game will carry, but my first impressions are positive. This is one of the most impressive free games I've played yet. Nexuiz and Alien Arena 2006 elicited lukewarm reactions and I have yet to re-install either game. I anticipate I'll play GunZ a few more times, if only to explore other maps (and perhaps be called a "hacker" one more time).

:D

I think its time for me to start the incredible battle!

I like free beta tests. Last one I did was Knights online when I got to level 30 and then they wanted money =(. They are fun while they last....

When asked what the name "Gudlaug" means, I replied that I honestly didn't remember. When I was was creating my character, I had a memo pad in front of me. It was turned to a page on which the name "Gudlaug" was written. Desperate for a character name, I punched it in and started playing.

After doing a quick bit of research, I recalled why I chose the name as a potential moniker for a character. The name "Gudlaug" means "God + consecrated" in Old Norse. Click here for the page where I first discovered the name.

I'll working to level my character to level 10 (with a little help) so I can start a Tribe of Judah clan on the GunZ servers. Should someone be interested, willing, and approved to lead a Tribe of Judah GunZ chapter, I'll grant them the necessary access at that time.

I'd be interested in leading it Tek. My characters names is James_Howlet. Only level three, but i'm working on it.

"Lets have a fun time playing fairly!" I don't like the game very much at all, it's not very fun compared to The Specialists. And I just don't really like the idea of FPS/RPGs, it sounds like fun combining 2 of the most fun game types, but when you think about it, those with more skills get better equipment/stats, and it's way unbalanced.

The game just updated a patch, and now it crashes every time it finishes the very first loading bar when I try to connect to the servers. Is this happening to anyone esle?

(btw my account name is Fyrebat incase anyone sees me on and wants to game)

I would have to agree with Killerah on this one. I played around with Gunz for a while once and found it to be most unsatisfying. The Specialists is a much better choice for that kind of gameplay and I highly recomend that anyone who has HL1 give it a try.

To each his own. My tastes are by no means an indication of current gaming community trends. I tend to favor sleeper hits like SiN, Heretic II, and Natural Selection. I can't stand Counter-Strike. So I'm not too surprised that a game I find myself liking has met with mixed reactions.

If you're reading reviews and can't decide whether or not to try it out, remember that this is a free game. All it costs is a bit of time and bandwidth.

By the bye, I created the TribeOfJudah GunZ last night, with some help from a few friends. Tribe of Judah members interested in joining should post a reply in this thread.

I've heard of this. Can you give me a quick review of it? (content, graphics, sound/music, etc. just like one or two paragraphs would be more than good enough :D)

Can you give me a quick review of it?
^Sure I can give a brief review as I am impressed with it.

This is a pretty addicting third person shooter. (I guess all games worth playing are addicting) There are melee swords and Gunz. Usually when games cross sword fighting with guns, players just stick with either guns or swords as one is clearly better than the other. In this game you have to use them both to do good. The guns will drop an opponents HP the quickest while a sword is used to stun an enemy, bock bullets(to the upper half of the body), wall climb, or hit people with. The most common strat I see is for people to sneak up on someone with a sword, stun them, and then when he's on the floor(stunned), unload a mag on him.

I think the best part of the game is you get the cool Max payne dives(no bullet time) and the matrix wall running/wall kicks. If your constantly moving it is extremely difficult for someone to kill you. You can pretty much safely move around to any section of the map as long as your doing cool moves. I think the game leans more towards that of a FPS than an rpg. I was playing a game with 6 other players that were lvl 11-17, and I was the "weakest" one at level 6. I ended getting the best kill/death ratio (not to brag or anything :D )then everyone else that game(FFA) and got more experience than anyone else. Experience for a level 6 character goes a lot longer way than experience for a lvl 11 character too just like any other game. (There was a trick to the map, but it was easy to pick up on )

The RPG aspect of the game is as you fight you get bounty(and lvls of course). You buy better guns and better armor with the earned bounty. The guns are not extreemly better, so if you are in a 6 level range of another person, you have a descent chance of killing them. For example theres a lvl 0 handgun that does 16 dmg and the very best handgun(level 40 I think) did 50 dmg at a slightly faster speed. So while a lvl 5 vs 40 has no chance, the lvl 6 vs lvl 11 is a close fight.

The music is not redundant or annoying at all, no matter how long you play. and you get a sound for every time your bullet hits a guy, so you know when your doing damage. I guess I liked this game so quickly is because its free and theres no blood or gore. I would say the graphics are about HL 1 quality

Guys please join us on the Tribe of Judah TeamSpeak. Alot of us normally get on and we all go play together. So please come join and we will all play together ^_^

Don't forget Korean style. Such as stepping, and slashshooting. XD Which is the most effective way to put someone down, and being a very difficult target to simply spray, or try to stab in the back and spray on the ground. Which is rather lame, at best. The sword isn't only for stunning, it's also for butterfly up close, which can confuse, and smash your opponent in a matter of seconds. =P

If they're like CS, I'll pass.
They're more accurate than the guns in CS. If you aim at the broad side of a barn, you'll hit it.

GunZ has no interest in realism, so CS fans may not care for the gameplay. Personally, I love unrealistic gameplay (one of the many reasons behind my love for UT2004 Onslaught), so I'm diggin' the game.

Oy, spending 1,000 BP (bounty points) to make the TribeOfJudah clan set me back farther than I realized. I also spent 850 BP on dual swords (which proved far more clumsy than I had anticipated).

Rather than face frustration and try to re-tool my level 10 character, I've created a new character named "Zygmunt" (Teutonic name meaning "victorious defender"). I selected the build that starts out with a sword and dual uzis so I can delay purchasing a new sword until later.

I have to say, though, I rather like the speed and freedom of movement the dagger offers. The sword is not as swift as I'd hoped and triple-clicking the attack button automatically sends you into a combo attack that leaves you wide open if you miss.

Oh well. Maybe I just have to get used to the sword.
