Guild Wars Chapter

I'm going to buy Guild Wars, the day it comes out.  This might be the only MMORPG I buy.  The reason for this is that the last time I bought one the company shut down the servers.  This wouldn't have been so bad if they had let the people that played the game run there own.  After the shut down the sent me The Sims!  Why in the world would they send me such a crappy game.  The other reason is that I refuse to pay for a game that I already own.  By paying $10-$15 a month to play one game I could buy at least five different games.  So I have one question are we going to have a Guild Wars chapter?

possibly find the people to fill the positions of

Chapter leader
co-leader
recruiter

basicly get it staffed and we will add it.

though i do want to caution you about making such blanket statements about MMORGP's, some have been not so good, though if you go with established companies like blizzard or (hate to say it) Sony on line (everquest).

the price per month can be debated. my biggest fear with guildwars is that it will turn into another Diablo II basicly. since the servers are free, they will most likely have alot happen on the client side, which means lots of hacks/trainers.

phew..loj when i saw that you were the last person to post in this thread, I was "is this guy getting another mmorpg"

I've lost most of my interest in this game. From the play weekends the game just feels far too linear for this type of game. What it really feels like is a big fancy multiplayer only Diablo 2, which shouldn't be a surprise considering that the people making GuildWars were largely responsible for it.

I do believe there will be sufficient interest to start a Guild Wars chapter. As LoJ mentioned, and as always applies to new chapters, we would need staff members in place before starting the chapter itself. The chapter leader and/or staff members could then recruit, both inside and outside of ToJ, to bring in new chapter members.

I assume the previous MMORPG you're mentioning is Motor City Online. Same thing happened to me. Anyway, I preordered Guild Wars, so I'm in it as a casual member, unless of course the UT team doesn't work out (chances are remote).

So...

So, is anyone doing the Beta Weekend Event? I'll log in on Saturday around 11:00 AM-ish (gotta set the kid down for a nap first) and plan on being on long enough to get a feel for the game. I'll look for anyone else from this group, just be sure to post your character name here.

That's cool that you get to play it every weekend. Has it gotten boring or anything? Any complaints? Because I only played it for about an hour on one of the open beta weekends. Seemed awesome, but then again, I only played it for a grand total of an hour.

Every weekend? I wish...

Actually, once a month they hold a Beta Weekend Event (BWE). This month's is going on right now. It would be my first... except that as of now, I don't have a clue when I'm going to find the time to actually play.

I've got a NM battle scheduled with my FFXI linkshell (guild) tonight, then other commitments all day Saturday... church Sunday morning... I'll have a total of about 4 hours available for this. :/ I kind of feel bad about that, because I know some others are just BEGGING to play.

Anyhow, I'll report back on what I like/don't like on Monday.

I have several characters, but adding one name will give you all of them on your buddies. My name is

Lemon E Fresh

eh i played it back during the alpha i think at the E3 week or so it was a kinda cool game not much was implemented yet, seems like the basicly game play has remained the same from what i saw, not many skills to choose from, and the class combo is a neat idea but just not enough skills in my oppion, or you will see only certain combos since they are so good

like elemntalist/monk or elementalist/necro, monk/war war/monk ect, i dont know just hasnt had enough variety for me, though i do hope that has changed.

I respectfully disagree. :)

LoJ, here's a review I wrote for another message board. Strictly my opinions, but I was pretty much blown away.

Well, aside from a BCNM done with some members of my LS, my video game time this weekend was spent on the Guild Wars Beta Weekend Event. I'd highly recommend that anyone who is interested in this game go ahead and preorder, get the key to get into the beta and find out what the (lack of) hype is about.

For you graphics monkeys, the game is gorgeous, even at it's lowest settings (which I had to run because my PC is two years old now). There's more than enough backdrop, whether you're talking about the "pre-Searing" or "post-Searing" Ascalon. Character models are detailed, but not very customizable initially. Enemy models are similarly well detailed. You can actually tell well before coming within range what enemy type that is on the horizon, and how many. Due to all the detail, lag can be a problem in heavily crowded areas, but show me an MMO where lag isn't a problem and I'll show you an MMO that no one plays. Sounds are realistic and appropriate, and though the BGM is very bland, it's not annoying and it's easy to tune out.

Though the graphics are very solid, the gameplay is even more so. I chose to go with a Warrior initially, and once I hit level three I had the option of getting a secondary profession. After completing a maybe ten minute quest (short, but it required a degree of skill-- took me three tries to pass it) I was able to use Monk abilities as well. I could choose up to 8 abilities from either profession (I went with 4 of each) and once you get trained in enough skills, you can change your function greatly simply by changing your skillset. Initially, I chose the "Paladin" style, with two knockdown attacks, a defensive buff, raise, and several different healing abilities. This proved extremely effective in the PvE missions, and horrible in PvP. However, if I had more time, I could have earned more skills to change to a ranger/mage-killer build (like an ability to increase movement speed to get into melee range faster), which would have increased my PvP effectiveness.

Progression goes very quickly; I dinged 7 on the last mission before end of the BWE, in roughly 7-8 hours of playtime. HP/mana regeneration is very quick after battle, so EXP flows quickly and steadily. You're better off soloing for EXP... but some quests with high EXP rewards can only be done as a group (or you'd be overwhelmed by the sheer number of mobs). There are no death penalties whatsoever (except for having to restart a quest or mission). Travel between cities is incredibly easy-- you can warp to any city you've been to at any time simply by clicking the map and selecting that city.

I am not a huge fan of the trading system-- it's pretty much simply a bunch of people shouting what they have or what they need. There's no auction house system as of yet, but gold is fairly easy to come by. To craft an item, simply bring the raw materials to a NPC crafter and the item is made-- there is no PC crafting in GW. Therefore, the prices on crafted items will remain constant.

The cutscenes are well written (so far), and the storyline is compelling, yet it's been done before. It's the whole "last vestiges of a once great kingdom" thing that's as fresh as a 3 month old cantaloupe, but the cinematics and writing actually help to make up for it.

From what I've seen so far, GW does what it set out to do. It addresses my concerns about MMOs that take up too much of my time doing nothing. Before I make a final judgement though, I'd like to if there are going to be differences in the trading system in the final build. However, the gameplay is my style, and the graphics are very solid. Overall, give it a try. It only costs you $5 to preorder, and if you think it stinks, just use the deposit on something else.

Anything new happening with a Guild Wars chapter? I just pre-ordered. I'm not even in ToJ yet...guess I need to apply :)

Sweet!

Well, Phantom and I will be doing the next BWE, March 18-20. If you've preordered, you probably received a beta test key so you can get in. I was in the last event, so I'd be glad to show you the ropes. :)

As far as forming a chapter, well, only 3-4 people who post here have really expressed interest. I would join (and if asked, I'd consider leading) a clan of folks from here. However, I can tell you that a clan of 4 just will not cut it. We'll see what happens closer to release.

Either way, look me up in-game as Pastori Mastersson. ;)
