So whats going on is Guild Wars is trying to give us something to look forward to while we wait for GW2 to be released. This will also expand the story and give us a closer look into some of the lore. Here is the first interview concerning it...

So it seems we have a lot more to look forward to in GW1 and can expect some new aspects of the game.
