Graphics Card

  Hey all,  heres my trouble.

I recently bought a radeon 9800pro.  Worked great, 99 fps durning cs 1.6 toj server.  Price dropped a week later so i decided to upgrade; the new radeon is not out yet.  So I pick up the GeForce 6800 GT 256mb gddr3 Agp. Broke my pockets.
Anyways,  I can only get 60 fps now, no higher, lower but who wants lower.   On another note my fps went up on source cs beta like 20 fps from the switch.  What give?

anyone no?

? please....someone get me 99 fps again.  And there is a difference from 60 to 99.

In recent tests, most ATI cards beat out NVidia cards in HL2 and CS games.

Make sure you have the latest drivers/updates from both Nvidia and Direct X. Also, make sure you got rid of all those ATI drivers you have installed previously (this includes ALL ATI related folders, even 3rd party ATI software).

Also, dont forget the console command
fps_max 101

If none of this helps, completly delete all graphics drivers in your computers and start from scratch (this should allow the system to re-detect your computer graphic card, and let the settings restart.)

With that  powerful of Geforce card. wow.  I'm running a Geforce go5700 (laptop) 64mb dedicated card, 8x agp, 533mhz system bus and i get 60fps.  So the 6800 should definetly get more.  Key word should.  I agree with para and the drivers.  Drivers can do wierd things.

note* Like the new ATI drives (version 4.9 i think) is suppost to boost graphic perfomance like 10-15% on most things and something like 25% on Doom 3.

Ok iam rechecking to see if ati is still on my computer. Iam sure ive gotten rid of it all. I got the newest driver. Its working better then the 9800 on source beta so.. its not that geforce is inferior.

Ok still not working, i got direct x 9, commanded fps_max everything. it will go lower then 60fps. like fps_max 40 but not over 60. newest driver no ati files(working great on other games) heiscomingsoon i have really good eyes hehe. Matrix eyes. this is frustrating. ty for trying guys.:;):

i'm just going to throw some ideas out in the air, some may have no corilation to graphics performance.
-  maybe the nvidia card could be conflicting with the motherboard chipset or BIOS type and version.
-  drivers could be conficting
-  motherboard resourses could still be dedicated to ati graphics drivers
-  OS may play a factor
-  windows updates are either not updated or the previous ati updates (if any) are still installed and conflicting
-  not sure if this could even count as something wrong but: installed games (including steam) still see and are performing like ati drivers
-  hardware might be restricting performance, like not enough ram for Geforce but was enough for ati (dont go out and buy any cause i suggested that), or agp slot is 1.1 instead of 2.1, but i believe that the 9800 is 2.1 version agp

umm, cant think of anything else, if i do i will post.  i dont know, hescomingsoon probably knows more than i do.

Turn vertical sync OFF in your graphic card properties.

heiscomingsoon, agreed, the human eye really can't see above 30fps, but your computer sure can, and you can tell a difference when playing CS between 30 fps and 100 fps.

Thanks guys for all your responses. I really do appreciate the time you each took trying to help me. Ill figure it out. i think it could be:
Talon"- windows updates are either not updated or the previous ati updates (if any) are still installed and conflicting" ive tryed alot of things and will keep trying. I can live with 60fps, its just knowing i should have more and not getting what i payed for. Ya know what iam saying. again thanks guys.

Just a note. When you installed the new video card . The game autoresets the graphics for a better card (higher resolutions) thus causing some slow down. Also if you are running it in AGP 8X change it to 4X and try that. Fast Write enabled? Was your Ati card overclocked?
Bios settings correct?
There are quite a lot of things that can slow your video down. CS

also try what goose said, turning off the vsync....cause i have a geforce fx 5500 256mb card and i also got 60 fps on cs....but i turned the vsync off and was able to get 100 fps

DING DING DING.....WE HAVE A WINNER FOLKS!!!!!!

Thank you all again and a speical thanks to....

one thing i dont get is:  I have a geforce go5700 laptop graphics card, defintely underpowered compared to the geforce 6800 desktop video card.  I get 100fps with v-sync off and 60 on, on cs.  I would think that the 6800 should get more than 100fps.  And i run 1280*1024*16 and i always run dual monitors.

Note: i asked tibido how many fps he got last time i saw him on toj. he responded 100.

what is max fps? Ive never set it higher than 101, i guess i heard that was max. A little side note, Source counter strike really looks cool with this card. I love that you can see the stuff in front of you through your scope without zooming in Gun skins overall LOOK fantastic:;):

umm, good question.  I dont know if typing fps_max 150 will do anything.  Maybe there is a max fps.

type "net_graph 3" in your console and it will come up with white numbers at the lower right courner of your screen.  You dont have to be in game to check your fps.  Then type "net_graph 0" to shut it off.

wel..

max_fps just sets the FPS variable value cut off. Basically it will not allow the videocard to go higher up (sort of like the in-game Vsync) then the maximum variable set. (props for this goes to Goose for taking the time to teach me this stuff)

Usually fps_max 100 or 101 is the best it can ever get to. Some say they can get 200 or 300, but best the HL engine can take is about 72-100 i think.
Mine is set at 101.

//Net_graph toggle
alias +ngraph "net_graph 3; echo Netgraph is on; alias ngraphtog -ngraph"
alias -ngraph "net_graph 0; echo Netgraph is off; alias ngraphtog +ngraph"
alias ngraphtog "+ngraph"
bind "key" "ngraphtog"

a simple toggler script that allows a bind key to swithc net_graph 3 on and off
