What do you people think of Grand theft auto 3?

I play the game because of humour, how car's
smash around in the game.

<Hands Caleb a steel helmet - you're going to need it>

I prefer the Vice City variant - it has more atmosphere.

Ditto. I don't really see the fun or moral ethics of driving around blowing peoples heads off (literally) and picking up prositutes along the way. Just plain sick.

Well, it's a game. A game is an abstraction designed to allow us to experience different challenges from the ones we experience in day to day life.

I mean, how many cases of virtual PTSD do you think there are on record? None?

I agree, it is a game. But are we missing the point here? Why put prostitution into games, anyway?

As for me, I'm not gonna spend my money on stuff like that; popular or not. And my kids aren't either.

Why put prostitution into a game? Well - it's part of life isn't it? Just because you find it distasteful doesn't mean that a portrayal of street life is complete without it...

i love the game ive played it a few places here n there. but when it comes to buying it the parents say no

Eh...it's a tough one. I'm playing the first game right now (GTA3, not Vice City), and while yea, it is pretty violent, I'm really enjoying the openess of it all. There's nothing else out there like this where you can actually play the game in any order you want, whenever you want. I would love to see more games like this, especially from a FPS perspective.

I don't condone the message the game might be sending, nor do I think it's really an accurate representation of street/gang life (everybody's way to stereotyped, it's like playing a comic book); it would have been nice to be able to play the game with the added dimension of morality. That is, you could be the heartless, cold blooded killer or the hitman with a heart of gold. But I guess if you want moral choices, you could go play Black and White; "morality" is certainly not what GTA is, or has ever been, about.

As for the prostitution thing, I guess it's just an added detail to make the game feel more immersive. Yea, it didn't have to be there, but the game IS about crime after all. If it wasn't there, I don't think anybody would have missed it, but because it IS there, it does make the game seem a little deeper (a player is encouraged to dig deeper and explore more of the city and find other little things to do, just for the heck of it, rather than just playing the game straight through).

And it's not like its unavoidable in play, either. You can get your health repaired at any of the hospitals instead!

Got this from some review of GTA:
========
"Besides all the violence, there are constant sexual references. If your health has been decreased for whatever reason, get in a car and look for a prostitute. When you find one walking down the street, she will get in when you stop the car. Then you can drive to a dark alley for a sexual encounter. You see your health points increase as your car begins to rock! Here is the most disturbing part: When you have sex with a prostitute, your health goes up but your money goes down. Want your money back? Get out of the car and beat her to death and take it back...either that or shoot her, run her over, or set her on fire for extra points. Also, in the game, people yell constant sexual references like "carpet muncher" and other such things."
=======
Regardless of whether it is "unavoidable" or not, when you buy the game, the industry make money off of you, just like any other game, but this just gives them more reason to make more games with that kind junk in it.

Now, please people don't take me for a game basher. I love games! I have tons of 'em! But where do we draw the line at? That's the question I'm asking. If we profess to be Christians, don't you think we oughta act like one?

And before someone mentions it, I'll say it myself. I'm not perfect, and I don't profess to be. I'm just trying to live as Christ would live, like the Bible says we should.

"As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
I Peter 1:14-16

That's all I gotta say, just had to get that off of my mind.

I used to have it for PS2 but I got rid of it because I felt convicted not to play it. Doesn't work like that for all people though; just listen to the Holy Spirit and you can't go wrong.
