Good series to introduce others to anime?

north star and ninja scroll " tons of cursing so beware"
I haven't seen any Fist of the North Star episodes, but I had the misfortune of watching Ninja Scroll before I learned to look more closely for content ratings on anime films. I would not only NOT recommend Ninja Scroll as an introduction to anime, but I would recommend AGAINST anyone viewing it because of the excessive and often gratuitous violence and sexual themes. While the animation is well-drawn and Ninja Scroll helped anime gain new viewers in the US (and, as such, is an important film from a historical perspective), the film's content is reason enough for me to recommend against watching it.

Many fans were introduced to anime through an even more important film in anime history with mature content (blood and gore, violence, and brief nudity) entitled Akira. I felt the film's story was poorly paced in places and confusing in others; I later read that the film tries to cover the content of several volumes of manga, which made sense of the story's "rushed" feel.

Akira is still a "hyper-violent" animated movie and most definitely not for children. Squeamish adults may want to skip this one, too. There are better anime films and series without the violence that helped characterize Akira and spark interest in anime in the late 80s and early 90s.

The Cowboy Beebop series, and the movie Spirited Away drew me in. Samurai Champloo sealed the deal.
