I just gained a few points of geek cred. How? By setting up my Playstation 2 as a FTP server and downloading save games from a memory card to my desktop PC.
Just thought I'd share.

Nice! And you were able to do this legally/without voiding the warranty?I just gained a few points of geek cred. How? By setting up my Playstation 2 as a FTP server and downloading save games from a memory card to my desktop PC.

While we're on the subject of geek cred, I should mention that I was able to get my Wii Remote to interact with my notebook PC. I was even able to use it as a pointing device.
We posted at exactly the same time, so I doubt he avoided it that quickly.you avoided thom's question![]()
It's possible to load ELF files (including those designed to make the Playstation 2 function as a FTP server) without installing a modchip. ELF, or Executable and Linkable Format, files are the Playstation equivalent of EXE files for the PC.Nice! And you were able to do this legally/without voiding the warranty?

The Independence Exploit can also be used to load backups; while I'm a strong supporter of fair use, the Exploit is in a legal gray area and may promote piracy. For that reason, I'm going to decline posting a link to a tutorial on the forums, but if someone wanted to experiment with the PS2 for the sheer geekiness of using it as a FTP server, I'm sure Google would be happy to assist.Hey Tek, perhaps a how to is in order of how you managed to do such a thing?

actually it's fair use AND fully legal. Just because it can lead to piracy does not make it illegal. Using it for illegal purposes is illegal. So you can safely post the link. The Independence Exploit can also be used to load backups; while I'm a strong supporter of fair use, the Exploit is in a legal gray area and may promote piracy. Boo hoo? =Dyou... you killed it!! you killed my joke!! *sob*
Boats and firearms lead to piracy too, and those are also legal.
Both valid points, which is why I supplied the name of the exploit in an earlier post. Instead of posting a direct link, I provided the information one would need to search on Google to find and download the files necessary for the exploit.actually it's fair use AND fully legal. What, only one?Geek point to Tek:
Total points: 1
And, conversely, not everything that is beneficial is legal. It's a vicious cycle. As Paul explained in his first letter to the Corinthian church, not everything that is legal is beneficial.
you got your ps as an ftp server..that's geek cred. IIRC the will nunchuk is desgined to be aremidial pointing device....Both valid points, which is why I supplied the name of the exploit in an earlier post. While I'm a vocal proponent of fair use, I don't want to be an "enabler" for piracy. It's a thin--and difficult--line to walk. If Playstation 2 owners want to download the PS2 Exploit Utility 5.0 Public Beta and uLaunchELF and figure out how to play backups of games they own, then I believe that falls under fair use; however, I don't feel comfortable providing a direct link to the utility.
I haven't posted a direct link to download DVD Shrink (a free program developed to help users easily back up their DVDs) for the same reason.
