Today I spoke with a job counselor at a church in the area I live to try to see if I could get some help from the job ministry at the church to get a job. It's a pretty cool program and a lot of churches are doing it these days.

But anyways... he asked me what kind of work I do or am looking for and I told him that I'm a graphic designer. Now this is a direct quote from him...

"Oh.... wow. [long pause] That's a really tough field to try and find a job right now."

/cry. Not only is the economy awful and a lot of people are suffering looking for work.. but I happened to have chosen a field that is suffering even more. lol.

They just don't know what they're missing out on if they got themselves a wicked awesome website from you!

Praying for you to find some mulah soon

If its any solace, a few of my friends graduated as Finance majors.

I think they trumped you!

However, I do hope you find a job soon and pray for you to get one!

Hey Bill: I know Graphic Design is kind of your specialty and probably your priority job choice, but have u considered getting a simple part-time job to give u a bit of income while u continue to look for a Graphic Designer position? I'm sure alot of retail stores or restaurants (serving or cooking) would be hiring for the Holiday season. I know cooking is one of your passions, why not make a little bit of money from it in the time being? Just quit when u get the job u want. :)

Thanks for the advice Fatkid! I've been considering that for sure. Right now I am doing some graphic design part time for my old boss.. but I might end up doing what you said as well to pull in some more money. :)

:( sorry bill! that's not very encouraging to hear. on the other hand, graphic design......cool! i wonder why it's suffering so much. i would think almost everything in the entertainment/technology business would be doing great in this country. /don't get it

My theory is that is has to do with not wanting to expand during difficult financial times. Most companies that would need design would be doing so to either update current packaging, revamp corporate identity, or to offer a new service (web site, new product, etc). And since times are hard now most companies are just going to use what they have (current design) rather than pay to make new "pretty stuff". It's such an important thing to do... but when companies are suffering it's one of the things that isn't a necessity to survive sadly. :(

Have you checked out http://99designs.com/?

It's a crowd source style design site for independent designers to post on jobs and get gigs. We have used this at our office a few times.
