Forgotten Classic Games

What are some of the classic games you like? What are they and why did you like them? What game made you a gamer? Here are a couple to start off...

Bionic Commando (Nes): BC's grappling arm was something different in a time when most heroes jumped (you could not jump in BC at all). It's utilitarian usage in warding off enemies and in gameplay was fun. Often heard it mentioned as a game that should have a sequel, but, never has.

Monkey Island (PC)(1-3 are excellent MI 4 was less so.): The BEST point and click adventure game ever and one of my favorite games of all time. Sure you got stuck on some puzzles, but, putting in the wrong solution to a puzzle often had results as entertaining as the right one. IDK if it is true, but, I've heard MI inspired the ride that inspired Pirates of the Caribbean movies. MI is so much better than the movies though and a lot less dark. I find it odd that I like MI so much when you consider the plotline centers around a lot of voodoo related stuff, but, it is all so absurdly comical I can't take any of it seriously. What is Lucasarts thinking churning out so many Star Wars games while neglecting the gaming bliss that is MI.

Excerpt from MI 3 (yes that is Scrooge McDuck's voice =D ) (warning while the game excerpt is harmless google video comments are not -_-)

Side note could anyone send me (e-mail) the PC versions of MI 1& 2. I have them, but, they are on 5.25 floppy. I don't have a 5.25 drive that will work on my computer anymore so I cannot play them :(

5 inch floppies :P

that video is pretty funny but not much gameplay.

I doubt you could get the 5.25s to run except on a full blown DOS install since windows NT DOS is pretty much emulated trash.

<3 the MI classics, played through the first two games a while back, the first I played through with some friends, you would not believe how much more fun that is then playing through these hilarious games alone.

Although I didn't play those until I was about 14-15 my early gaming days were spent on an old DOS computer. I will never forget those games, Commander Keen! Jill of the Jungle! Cosmo! the old Duke Nukem games (I.E. the side scrollers)! /sigh those were the best of times.

Yeah I tried to get Wing Commander II (another Dos game that rocked) to run with DosBox on XP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dosbox with semi-working results. I figure Monkey Island might work with it or with ScummVM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ScummVM.

MI is one of those games I think everyone should play at least once. It's the kind of game you'd actually want your kids to play one day (not that I have any).

Google had a couple of speedplays of Monkey Island one and two. Speedplays are just wrong for MI though, half the fun is getting stuff wrong or examining objects. It is really like looking at art though a keyhole you just don't get half the effect.

Ah Wing Commander (another game I have on 5.25 :p ) . WC I was better than II IMO. I always thought they should have shown a wing fall off during the landing sequence after landing with heavy damage (and everything blown off) :p . Ah memories, ramming two enemy ships together, blowing up carrier groups you were just supposed to recon or keeping that moron Manic alive. Ah a Classic...

Guybrush Singing in MI 3....
Oh, there's a monkey in my pocket,
And he's stealing all my change,
His stare is blank and glassy,
I suspect that he's deranged...

Lol!! I remember that game. You could take off from the Tiger's Claw, blow up your wingman, turn around and shoot at the Claw until it was right on the verge of blowing up, jump to the craft you're supposed to escort, blow it to smithereens, jump back to the Claw, set your ship into ramming speed and eject. You would return to a celebration where you received a metal for ejecting safely (alas, could only happen once per game) and then attend a funeral ceremony where you would swear to kill those Kolrabis who killed your wing guy. Uh, yea, Kolrabis, sure...

BTW the Sega CD version of that game was identical to the PC Version - so in the worse case, you might consider sourcing a Sega CD system. There are lots of other great old games for that system too...Nuke War, Road Rash...ah those were the days of real gaming. :)

Commander Keen, Full Throttle, The Dig, Hurc's Adventures for PS, Dalex for old school Apple 2s, Oregon Trail... there are more I just can't think of them.

Overkill. It was a game where you were a ship and flew throught the side scroller and gathered powerups. You'd eventually gain new weapons and you'd be this unpwnable ship. It was sweet.

Sqweak-en!

Full Throttle and The Dig were games I wanted to play due to MI joy run-off (because they were Lucasarts games too), but, never got too. While Oregon Trail we actually played in school one time, guess it was educational IDK.

My first game experience was the mall arcade, blinking lights must have a hypnotic effect on children or young Gerbils (are arcades as dead where you guys are? :( ). I mainly played some Galaxia and there was this Star Wars X-Wing game were you could sit in a booth to play. It was neat considering all the polygon faces were black and it was purely line drawn "use the force Luke" used to come over the speakers at the appropriate moment. "Dragon's Lair" was always eye catching, but, I did not play it much. I was still pretty disinterested in games though till I got a Nes and 2 games "Commando" which I actually thought was going to be better than the other one..."The Legend of Zelda" hehehe silly Gerbil. Zelda really got me started playing, but, I wasn't that hooked till I played "Final Fantasy II" for SNes (3 or 4 in Japan I think) anyway the rest is history.

GO NINTENDO! Keep the torch alive where Sega has fallen! Sony and Xbox are cold and impassive we need you! :p

-Strike Commander/Tactical Operations Expansion
-The Journeyman Project
-Alone in the dark 3
-Deus
-Take No Prisoners

I was interest in those Adventure games able to customize stuff.
EX: Heal your wounds, reloading your ammo, use a blunt object at your enemy, making weapons, solve puzzles, etc.

Resident Evil got me into that type of Adventure genre, though, in a survive/horror way. Still, very challenging, trying to fight off zombies with 1 pistol and 15 bullets is very scary.

For strategy games; Warcraft, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires.

And shooter games, everyone knows; DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D, Hexen, Heretic, Duke Nukem, etc.

Eric the Unready! Old fantasy-adventure interactive fiction game. You know, "light lantern". "Look around."

Love, love, love it! It's just insane enough to be fun. :) And I can run it still, though I had to download the software. We DO own the game, but it's on the old 5" floppies. :) I have the manual, though, to do the "type in a number from the game manual to play" thing. Uh, wait, type in "your measurement" to "get your armor"...that was it.

Technically, I guess, it's Paul's; he's had it since before we got married.

Oh, thanks a lot! Now I started a new game of Eric, and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!

I totally blame, uh...

*goes to check who started thread*

GERBIL! It's YOUR FAULT!

Simcity. The first PC game I had. It was bootleg though so I got rid of it ^^. I did buy Simcity 2000 later though.

Wolfenstein 3D. Ach mien lamen! The FPS that began FPSs! Only played the original shareware demo, it was fun, though it could have done without being able to drink blood if your health was low... blech

Out of this World. Played the Snes version, short but sweet game.

edit: dont forget, CHEX QUEST!

Hmm sounds like a game about cereal hehe. (One Google later) I'M IS! I'M STUNNED!

MWAHAHAHA! Goggle-ing it "Eric the Unready" sounds similar to Monkey Island (except MI sounds better). So whatever you do don't play Monkey Island 1-3 then... MWAHAHAHA!

Not too many console games on the list yet. I'd think someone would mention the obvious ones like Zelda, Mega Man or even Mario (of course they aren't exactly forgotten classics). Btw while I like Zelda games I dislike Mario ones (fantasy sword wielding hero or fantasy plumber hmmm hard choice :p) Played the Mega Man Collection on Playstation 2 and the games are still fun. I need to get the Mega Man X collection next ^^ .
