FF XIV Beta to open next week

2) 98% of WoW players aren't addicted. It's just that good.

You know, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. ;)

Regardless of what word one wishes to use to describe it...people keep playing wow because:
A) They like the game...although this accounts more for new players staying around than for your active players.
B) Because there is always some ever-dangling carrot in front of you to go fetch like a dutiful little player. (Blizzard has perfected this)
C) Because they feel they have a lot of investment in the game...hundreds or thousands of hours, money, research, etc. Leaving WoW "loses" that investment...so they decide the best course of action is to invest hundreds/thousands more hours.
D) Relationships are a huge factor, and WoW has a lot of active players.

I'm certainly not saying WoW is not a good game, and I agree most attempts to enter the MMO market have been terrible and buggy. I just think saying WoW keeps it's players simply because "it's that good" ignores a lot of bigger factors. WoW is the Halo/Madden of the MMO market.

Except that it is a much, much better made game. ;)

Tell that to a Halo/Madden player. ;)

Halo Player: "But, but...you can play FPS! With other people! And it has aliens, it's so amazing and innovative!"
People are still playing counterstrike...the old xbox servers are off.

Madden Player: "Well, I had to buy the new one. They shut the old servers off, you know."
And yet, it still doesn't come close to the glory that was Tecmo Super Bowl 3. Pity.

I did want to post a statement to this, thinking about RyanB's post about his semi-lame gaming rig in the "PC gaming fail" thread:
WoW needs a good NGE patch. Worked wonders for SWG. :p
One of the reasons why WoW has so many subscribers is because its graphics are so un-intensive. My gaming rig is very much like RyanB's, except that it is a laptop :P so it doesn't even technically have a graphics card, just a chip. The lack of super-detailed-hardcore-graphics has the effect of actually widening the WoW fanbase.

That being said, Cataclysm is said to include some semblance of an New Graphics Engine option.

I agree completely that low graphics requirements are a large part of WoW's success. Force people to have high end machines or buy some weird peripheral, and you've just limited yourself to a niche market at best.

I think that console gamers are ready to play online. I'm not sure FF14 will be a huge breakout success...but something will be, and soon.

NGE was a New Game Enhancement, pretty much crippled SOE's subscriber base with horrible combat mechanics and neutering the classes from the 15 or so down into 9... o.o

Just seeing the Letters NGE and SOE together makes me throw-up a little in my mouth. I still have nightmares of feeling like I spent years on a fun mmo to have them just say "oh well" and completely not listen to their game community.

Let us never forget just how truly evil Sony is.

And no, that's not sarcasm. Sony is still evil. Even if the Playstation 3 has gained some momentum, the price is now competitive with the rest of the market, and it no longer looks like a George Foreman Grill.

Agreed. I feel that the PS3 is by far the finest piece of entertainment technology out right now. Anyone who feels otherwise is obviously wrong.

But Sony as a company? This is the group of people who came up with SecuRom and make a large part of the RIAA/MPAA. In addition, Sony has been leading the fight to try to take away our rights of first sale. Publishers were already trying to curb used game sales by offering one-time use code, but the new SOCOM on PSP is taking it to the next level:

Buy the game used? Well, you will have to pay $20 to play online. Of course, I'm sure that won't stop people from buying it used from GameStop for $5 less than new...

I do NOT think a console is a good place for an MMO unless it is specifically built for the console, and not a PC-Console port, which this is... I am very excited for FFXIV, but see the only good experience for it being the PC, like MMORPGs are meant to be played... Ugh, I remember all the crap that FFXI felt due to console gamers lagging the game... Now yes the PS3 is more powerful than the PS2, but I already know there will be problems from the start...

My opinion on the matter...

PS3 more powerful than the PS3? That's like DBZ-style recursive power!

Seriously, though...I definitely agree that it would stink if the console held this game back due to limitations like sort of happened with the PS2/FFXI or a lot of the shooter games. Then again, this time around it's not like you're having to buy an extra modem + hard drive, haha. Plus I think more FFXI had more design issues than anything inflicted by the console counterpart.

Fix't*

You make a good point...but with 20-50 skills on your screen at one time, I just don't see how you could be very effective in like a PvP situation with just a PS3 controller... It's like the people that play WoW with a 360 controller...yo can always tell who they are :p

Yeah, wasn't familiar with the number of skills involved, although figured there were a lot. I'll tell you what I want to see come to consoles: Guildwars 2. Think about it...it's already without a subscription, there is a robust update structure in place, and there are only 10 skill slots + normal actions like moving/selecting close enemies/etc.

Guildwars 2 on the console would be epic win.

I never thought about that, but that would be great...you have the 8 skills which could easily be configured to the controller... And it would play well that way... Good idea :)

Hadn't noticed before, but seems release date for the CE is September 22 @ $75. Site is saying December 31 for PS3 (hope that's true if I do decide to buy); I don't think this is confirmed yet though.

Curse.com is saying March 2011 on the PS3 version...however, I have never known Cruse.com to be 100% accurate...to be straight out honest, they are really a WoW site...

Im pretty stoked for the Console because i think it will give more of a feel of "the World"
