Far Cry Demo

Just tried out the Far Cry Demo, Wow that is amazing turn on 1600-1200 and max AA simply stunning. You start the mission in a boat aproaching an island with guys all over the place I went into this little secluded cove and hid in some brush threw a rock in the water and made an enemy aproach in thier nicer boat. They come up say something like "what was that" I then cap them both in the head and steal there boat and move on to the jeeps on the beach.

My only objection is there seems to be a slight delay like 1/10th a sec and makes it hard to aim similar to Deus Ex but this is a pre release demo so it its not finished yet.

What was so impressive, it's just another fps. Nothing revolutionary graphic-wise, the graphics remind me of something of a cross between breed and halo.

Hush. It's a first-person shooter NOT set during World War II, NOT packed to the brim with occult, demonic, and otherwise nasty imagery, and has some vague hope of an accurate release date (i.e. not developed by Valve, Blizzard, or Epic).

I haven't seen a single screenshot yet, but that alone makes me want to play it!

So you must have played it on very low settings? In the Demo AA is broken and you have to either turn it on with some text edits in the settings files or use your ATI control panel to turn it on manually. When its on the game looks amazing I put it on 1600/1200 with 16 times Antistropic filtering and 8 times AA and its better looking then any game I have had on this computer and I have tested quite a few.

Well, in recent memory, the only non-WWII, non-Occult fps I can think of is XIII. At least that's the only fps that came up on my radar. (UT2004 isn't out yet, U2XMP is a bonus pack, and...Hmmm...I don't think there are any others) Oh, I guess Savage works too, but I never picked it up and I'm not sure how popular it got.

I echo Tek's frustration with the derth of WWII inspired FPS games out there. It's like the ton of terrorist-vs-counter-terrorist realism FPS games that came out previous years (and are still coming out me thinks).

The only non-WWII/realsim FPS that I had fun with lately was Elite Force 2 on the single player side, and Unreal 2's XMP on the multiplayer side. Maybe that's a good thing though - all the players are focussed in on one game and you don't have player-bases dividing on each other between other games in similar genres.

At any rate, I'll give this one a look, might float me boat...

Realism...Terrorist vs. Counter-Terrorist type game, right? (well, more Terrorist vs. Elite Marine Forces or whatever, but you get the idea)

Max Payne would fall into a non-war game too, and it's pretty good. I rather enjoyed MP2, good story, a bit of language too, but XIII is waaay worse.

I'd say your best bet for non-war would be The Magic School Bus Explores the Ocean...or Barbie Beauty Boutique...

re: Max Payne...that's true, but I've always thought of Max as a third person shooter, which it is, rather than first, but I digress... (PS - have you tried Max Payne: Kung Fun Edition? I bought MP for cheap just so I could try the mod, but haven't gotten around to it yet)

re: Far Cry...downloaded the demo last night....wow. Ok, it does rock "my boat" (hehehe...I said "boat"...and the game starts in a boat...ehheh....hehe....anyways...)

The graphics are definitely amazing, and I'm actually intrigued by the game play. I find it frustrating, but I'm still intrigued. Maybe it's just because I never really gave realism-based fps's their fair shake, and maybe I'll grow too frustrated with it in the end, but for now I'm kind of enjoying the "cat and mouse" feel of this demo level. Frustrated because I can't go rushing into any situation, strafing and blowing things up, but that's balanced out by the "puzzle" factor. (What do I have to do to get all of these guys to move out of the way so I can get further into the island?)

Anyways, I'll give it another few hours of play, or at least until I can beat the demo before passing final judgement, but the game definitely looks sweet.

After playing Q3-based games and mods for so many years, I think I've lost track of just how far the graphics in modern day games have come. I was playing the demo for Prince of Persia SOT last night as well and I had trouble keeping my jaw off the ground because of the air-tight gameplay, fluid animation, voice acting and graphic effects like fog, sand and haze. Now that game is one highly polished gem.

now now, let's not forget that LucasArts is releasing a Star Wars FPS soon (fall 04)

can we say Battlefront?

Imagine it, bf1942 in a gffa

re: the Star Wars Battle Front...

I'd be excited about this if it wasn't already being worked on by the BF1942 community. Why these guys are still around and not sued into submission, I don't know. Maybe LucasArts is finally starting to play nice with its fans.

either that, or they're gonna let it be built by those folks, then take the code an release it that way

btw...anyone have a decent link for farcry ?....

dl link that is...the official servers seem way too busy for my liking !!!

Wow, so many divergant threads to comment on. Umm..1stly, Farcry is beautiful, I actually spent about 2 hours putting around in the little rubber raft just to enjoy the scenery. I'm running it on a Radeon 9600 OCed, and it makes me want to cry with happiness. Bright colors, shiny objects, and no bodies on poles or pentagrams (in the demo so far). Secondly, Max Payne did have a bit of the occult in it, but I'm not sure how it fits in since you are trying to kill the devil worshipers. Lastly, the BF mod I'm looking for is BF:2750. Battletech meets BF1942, so you get vehicles, aerofighters, infantry and Mecha. W00T!

How "far" did you guys get in the Demo? I got up to main entrance to the mountain, but I couldn't bust my way through the guys to get to those stairs. Given the clue from the radio guy (blah blah blah "they can't find you if you're in the trees") I was thinking maybe I'm suppose to sneak by them. So I go around them and end up in a little inlet in the island, with a boat to the right and the helicopter over the ridge. Tried sneaking back up the mountain from the other side but couldn't find a way up. With the sniper scope/binoculars I managed to check out the main path to the base and it's just crawling with guys!!

So how do get up there?

I played Far Cry this weekend at a Local Lan and I must say the graphics are ownage! I spent most of my time walking around admiring the scenary and getting pwned.
