But how do you suggest they compete with PS3 and XBox? What should they be doing instead? Should they be aiming for the "video game console as epi-center for your digital lifestyle" target? Should their games "grow up"? I think that's something that would be hard to pull off - Mario in an FPS? ;)
(1) Snag at least three good RPG developers (I'm sorry; Squaresoft no longer counts) and put them to work. Try to sign a company with a proven track record to create a new series of RPGs strictly for a Nintendo console.
(2) Stick with what you know: analyze the XBox 360 and Playstation 3, wait a year, copy the good points of those systems, avoid the negatives, and release a new system.
(3) Cut back the budget for the Gameboy Advance Micro to scale back losses or break even.
(4) Create a game based on a character that wasn't around in 1986. It'd be shocking, I know, but maybe if they hire some new talent, they can do it.
(5) Create games that appeal to gamers over the age of 10 OR sign some third-party developers that will make those games. Gamers are growing up and Mario won't cut it for more mature games. Give adult gamers something like Splinter Cell or some other wildly popular M-rated title.
(6) Keep releasing Wario Ware games (which, by the way, are blatant ripoffs of the Bishi Bashi series, but still good), but make sure they stay true to the trend of unique strangeness (e.g. WarioWare Touched used the Nintendo DS's stylus, WarioWare Twisted uses a built in gyro-sensor, and so on).
(7) For the love of cheese, STOP making Mario Party games. Six is enough now.
(8) Study Sega's business decisions and do the exact opposite.
(9) Study Sega's history of innovation and emulate the successful innovations.
(10) Release a fishing controller to the Asian market. :D

Read this:
IGN said:
Next, Nintendo's vice president of corporate affairs confirmed to IGNcube at E3 2005 that Nintendo is working on a new IP that will premiere with the launch of Revolution. "Wait for Revolution," she said. "At least one new franchise. Brand new."

re: "one new IP"...'bout time!! But only one? I guess we shouldn't complain, they do such a good job on their first party releases everytime they're out the gate, I'm sure it's hard to find time to produce something new.

And Tek, what about Pikim? Pikim's new to the current generation of consoles and last I checked it was a hit. Plus all the Pokemon games...

Why doesn't Square count? And later this year Intelligent System's "Fire Emblem" is making it's debut on the GC.

You don't think it's going to sell? I can see the Japanese going APE over this thing. But if you already have an SP, you'll have to decide between upgrading to the DS (which has a crazy release schedule this coming year) or saying on the Advanced platform and getting a Micro. Hmmmmm...I think it will depend on the price. Smaller screen 'n all...If they could bring it in under $60-$80, that would be something...

As mentioned, the GC does have mature titles (All 3 Splinter Cells, Prince of Persia 2, TimeSplitters, Call of Duty, and <cringe> BMX XXX) plus at least one exclusive mature title in Resident Evil 4, but I must admit, I actually had to go to the Nintendo site to look up most of those titles, and aside from RE4, the GC does lack some third party "must own" games that are exclusive to its platform.

To bad they don't have Rare around anymore...

Perhaps a place for the much ballyhooed but mysterious Revolution controller?

Agreed. :)

Now, I heard a rumour, and I'm going to have to go looking up information on it, but the rumour went something to the effect of allowing users to make and play home-brew games on the Revolution, basically taking the opposite tact that Sony is taking with it's PSP. There are security hazards galour, but if they did that...ferget the third parties, you've now given the hobbyists/micro-game houses a console platform on which to deliever their games to the homes of millions of people, sell 'em through Nintendo's online service.

Again, just a rumour, and it's probably totally off the mark, but ...an interesting thought, and it gels with Nintendo's philosophy about "better games, not better processors".

And Nintendo needs to get Rare back somehow. Rare and Bungie are the only reasons I would consider a Micro$oft console.
