Dungeon Defenders II Announced

Dungeon Defenders was quite well liked by a number of our members here, so I thought word of Dungeon Defenders II might be worth sharing.

The action-RPG infused, teamwork heavy take on tower defense is coming back. This time, they're making the game free to play while promising it will not be pay-to-win. Development on the cooperative game is still in the early stages, but now they're adding a new competitive side of the game. They supposedly tried a variety of game modes but ultimately settled on bringing their own twist to the MOBA style of game for their competitive modes.

I know... I know... we already have more than enough MOBAs around, right? And, for the esports-minded, that's probably true.

However! If you were anything like me, tower defense games really didn't click, or at least were not particularly enjoyable, until Dungeon Defenders came along and did something exciting with it. Since the game's release, it's seen continual support from Trendy Entertainment. Similarly, I find there to be an appeal to MOBA games, but I just don't enjoy them. (I rather like Guardians of Middle-earth, but frequent stutter-lag makes it harder to enjoy than it should be.) With DunDef II bringing its charm, its loot, its character leveling, and a promise of shorter matches to MOBAs, I couldn't be more excited about the possibility the new game mode presents.

Anyway. Not sure when the game will officially release. That said, while the core game/cooperative mode is still early in development, the MOBA-like competitive mode is already in beta. If you tweet about the game using the #DD2 hashtag, you even have a good chance of getting beta access from Trendy Entertainment.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go boot up some DunDef.

I just want to get in some more time playing the multiplayer co-op games I already own: DunDef, Castle Crashers, Borderlands 2, etc. I'd like to be excited about a DunDef sequel, but I haven't logged nearly as many hours in the first game as I had expected when it first released and at least a few ToJ members were playing it every time I logged in to Steam.

I enjoyed my time with DunDef, especially since I was able to play it with my (then) 3yo. I will say, though, that they definitely dropped the ball on PSN support, and that I will be more wary in buying that version this time around.

Ah. It's too bad they didn't rock the PSN version. Too bad indeed. I guess pushing updates and stuff sucks on PSN/XBL; it's why Trendy said in their FAQ that DD2 isn't going to be on either service for the time being. It will support cross-platform play for Windows/Mac/Android/iOS, though.

DD is one of those games you get a LOT of mileage out of for the price, and now DD2 is dropping the price. I appreciate the heads up Kendrick. I passed on the great news to my daughter and there was much rejoicing to be heard in our home. Love that the co-op will be back, I am not sure how the MOBA thing will work out. I haven't been a fan of MOBA's in the past, but mainly because of the unforgiving community in games like LoL that doesn't have much tolerance for a new player. That's one of the things I have loved about DD's community is that it has been very tolerant, and I think it is because such a young crowd enjoys the game. Kids these days are taught how to be patient and non-judgmental in their elementary grades, how to assist others when they see help is needed, and how to do it courteously. Very much looking forward to many hours of DD2 with Minime.
