DSL vs Cable?

Would I get a different ping if i changed from meh Cable to DSL? My family wants to change it, but I don't see a reason why. DSL just has a slower pace, (which i heard) and we won't get the upload upgrade

I lurve my cable. Peaked at over 400K/sec the other day when downloading Sven Co-op.

If I had my choice, I'd go with cable, but that's because DSL in my area is weak. I suggest that you research the various broadband ISPs in your local area.

I think the major difference between the two is the reliability in speed. With DSL, I always get the same speed no matter what day of the week. With cable, depending on the number of other users on in your neighborhood and quality of your cable provider, your speed can fluctuate drastically.

Top speeds are not an issue. In fact, if you want the fastest connection where I live, it is through DSL with 6 mbps max download. That is 2x as fast as you average cable providers max. Of course it cost about $100 bucks a month here in Columbus.

DSL has two different types, asynchronus and synchronus. Asynchronus means your download will be faster than your upload. This makes it great for the average user and gamer. Synchronus is the same speed both ways and is more expensive and geared towards those who want to run servers.

Another thing is to check your distance from your CSO (central switching office). This can make or break your performance with DSL. If you are too far out out, forget about it an stick with cable. A real good site to help you out with any questions you may have is:

http://www.broadbandreports.com

They have lots of user reviews, tools and a broad band search utility.

Thanks so much guys for the info. Oh, and i will try the site out right away plankeye. Thanks for the awesome info

[Update]: I tested my speed out, and i got a spoofin 2.9 mbp for downstream, and 375kbp for the upstream. The SBC DSL plus package offers... 1.5mpb for down, and 128kb for upstream. Bleh.. I don't know, but price difference is amazing. DSL costs almost half cheap compared to my Road Runner Cable...

What to do...

if your cable has 2.9 down and 375 up and the dsl you're looking at has 1.5 down and 128 up it's no wonder the price difference is nearly half.

The bandwidth you are getting is nearly half in SBC DSL as it is in your cable.

Oh one other thing, I use my computer as a central internet admin, which means other computers at my house gets internet through mine. Would DSL be capable of it with out too much decline in the speed?

Actually SBCs upstream is 256kb for the 1.5 mbps package (or at least that is the case with my SBC DSL).

Yup, have the speed for half the price and half the headaches.

Is your family looking at cutting costs? I save $15 a month by having SBC DSL and Directv versus having Time Warner.

Aye, they are. well since your using SBC, with a decent ping and nice Internet connexions, Mebe we'll give it a try for a month. I hope i can set it up to my computer that works as a "gateway." Thanks so much! Oh and I'm assuming your using the Deluxe set. Thats the only one in my list that has a dynamic ip, with 256kb upstream. Well thanks

Flash, I highly suggest getting a router as opposed to using your computer as one, or make a router out of an older computer. They have better routing code than XP's Internet Connection Sharing in general.

About DSL vs. Cable. You usually have to order cable TV to get a good price on Cable internet, at least thats how Roadrunner/Time Warner do business around here. DSL is usually steadier as you don't share your connection with anyone for the most part, at least till it hits the really big pipes. If your phone lines in your house are old and crusty, DSL can be a bear to get working, miscellaneous shorts in our house have forced us to pull a line directly from the switch box outside our house.

I think you actually get lower ping times with cable on good days, but for gaming DSL is just too reliable if you have proper phone lines and are close enough to the C/O.

Aye, i will be getting one. Probably linksys wireless+wired router. Since my dad uses a laptop around the house we think it's nice to have one. I just hope it won't cuase another voice communication problem or anything like that, but i trust linksys.

I've seen tests done and D-Link comes out on top everytime. It's faster thant the Linksys and Netgear routers. Routers just don't STOP working Dead_Aim, either you have a bad one, or have wrong settings.

Ive had Sprint DSL (Terrible beyond compare) and Comcast Cable (Good just doubled there speed to 3mb/256k for free).

I Hated the sprint dsl I had it for about a year and they always billed me wrong and could not tell my why the price was $200 it would add up to around $120 and then they would say the rest is there and im like WHERE and there like its just there. Im paying around 50 for a 3mb cable connection now compared to 90 for a 1.5mb DSL a year ago.

Also the DSL was down all the time and even when I got the fast package it was 10th the speed my cable is now even when the cable is busy.

I also work for Bellsouth and There DSL is a bit of a rip off but much better then sprint.

Goose has got a point, but one thing, Netgear is slower then the rest, Linksys is fast actually. My Friend has a non-wireless one, but its good. Besides we don't need a fast connection with the wireless one since its just the use on the laptop, surfing, uploading internet.
