DSL v. cable

You said computer twice.

And I don't uninstall drivers! I did once because my USB drive wasn't working. I accidentally deleted the drivers for my C drive. That was a big booboo. Thank you alienware customer support!

Try to get a good security with IP addresses or a Router/Hub with most of them enabled. (Ask someone about that, Hescominsoon maybe)

You wouldn't want those IP address shared to everyone, hence, Cable is shared.

Yay for your parents! I've always had cable internet and my only experiences with DSL weren't very good. As always though, it depends on the provider, package, and location.
 
I have had very good experience with both DSL and Cable, plus a little T1 and T2. It basically comes down to who will give you the better deal in you area. In my area cable cost about $50 a month and I get 3-4Mbps download and 256Kbps upload, where DSL would cost $60 a month and only give my 128Kbps up and down, so for me it's no contest, I can do my own methods to keep my data private.

5Mbps download, 2 Mbps upload, $34.99/mo, and those are pretty much guaranteed speeds right now since it's fairly new tech. You can get packages as high as 15Mbps, which means you can download the LOTRO client (1.93 GB) in 1030 seconds, or a little over 17 minutes. Took me about an hour altogether with my cheaper connection.
