Dialup

Due to the consequences of certain bad financial moves (okay, I suck at budgets), the tax man, and the financial consequnces of some of our many blessings (not to mention the gas prices) we're looking into what we can still cut back on to save money.

One of the proposed sacrifices would be internet. Now being the geeks we are, giving up connectivity all together is just simply not an option. However we do have rather cruddy internet connectivity lately anyway so we're thinking about dialup.

Does anyone here play Guild Wars on dial up? How does it work? Any problems beside being the last one to enter a mission? Having this little community and hobby has been good for me so I'd like to avoid doing anything that would mess up the good thing I have going, but we'll see.

Well, the junkie campus internet lets my computer get 30-80 kps. Most of the time i get 30-60. I run fine on this. My computer always loads up quick. So I guess its okay for you since your using 56kps.

actually gw had specific techniques when it was made to work well with dial up. i never had any issues with dial-up when i used it. tell me when u get dial-up so i can show u how to tweak it.

Dial up is the pits. 15 years stuck on it. With Guild Wars the maps just killed you when you went into a different world. Walk away for about 25 minutes. Also if you go dial up you'll need a second phone line anyway. so i'd stay at a lower rated dsl plan , cheaper that way and no disconnection.

My sister has dialup, so she tried GW during the first Factions weekend. (Don't know the connection speed.) Let's just say she has a character on one of our accounts so she can play when she visits...

Thanks!

This has all been rather helpful. Still going to fight to keep something highspeed. But it's nice to know I won't lose my last addiction if I have to.

You have to consider that when factions hits, your probably going to be downloading every new map you go to, and if you do install gw again, you will be waiting for a very, very, very, very, very....<a few days later>...verrry long time, i know installing the client from the website take usually 20-30 min on high speed, then 5 min waits to go to certain areas. Also dial-up companies will usually boot you at 2-3 hours to save money on their lines. its not a random disconnect, its them trying to pinch every penny from your wallet

That's why I keep a copy of the Gw.dat file in my mp3 player, so if I'm ever somewhere where I want to play GW (assuming I have my usb cable with me, which I usually do), I can just transfer it from that to the computer, turning at least a 30 minute process into about 3.
