Developing PvP

So, I know that one of our "resolutions" for this year was to make it into the Top 1000 in guild PvP. I think that's great, and I'd totally wanna help.

Right now, I'm building up a Ranger/Mesmer. (As I've mentioned before, that was the only Ranger combo I ever saw from Observing.) Sooooo I was going to ask whoever is in charge or even knowledgable about our PvP stuff what exactly I should do with it. Basically, is there a certain specialty you want out of me (Hexes, traps, etc.)? I have no preferance in where I take my character, so let me know. See you guys!

I think as a ranger in PVP your specialty should be traps, or possibly disrupting or distracting bow skills, interrupting your targets. The best thing you might be able to do with your mesmer secondary would be something to keep renewing your energy.

While in observer mode you can deselect autocamera. Then you can double click on any one player and the camera follows him and you can actually see which skills he is using. See if there is a commonality between the Rangers you watch as far as what skills they use.

I am the PvP coordinator for the guild. If you are interested in PvP, the best recommendation I would have for you is to get to know your skills. I know that I tend to get caught up in one particluar build that works well for me. But what works for PvE rarely is all that effective in PvP.

Our first big step that we need to take is getting a full, effective team build put together. We tried an air spike a few weeks ago, and although we managed to win the first round in tombs 2 times, and hold our ground for several rounds, we didn't make it very far.

I started another thread a couple days ago (link) to discuss our next team build. I suggest either IWAY or ranger spike. Most of our rangers in the guild need to buy or capture a couple skills or finish the second 15 attribute point quest, but we can try. IWAY seems somewhat effective, but we would need to use several PvP only characters for lack of many high level warriors (W/R). Please visit that thread and help get the conversation going.

As for your R/Me, the suggestions above are good. Interrupts are a very important component in PvP. Traps, when used effectively are good as well (just don't trap opponents IWAY pets). Many IWAY builds include a trapper and/or edge of extinction. Ranger spike depends on syncronized high damage bow attacks, often a combo of kindle/ignite arrows, dual shot and punishing shot.

I have modified the air spike build with a few spirits. I now carry greater conflagaration and frozen soil on my ele. I need someone to carry Muddy terrain and quickening zyphr.

The following should be considered:
2 bond/prot monks
1 healing
2 E/R carring spike & spirits
3 carrying spikes and wards (mainly ward against elements)

If we work on calling better and use the wards properly iway teams dont stand a chance, it is mainly learning to think as a team and not as independant operators

Ranger spike is by far the hardest to beat. Id love to give it a try.

I was thinking...

I basically started a whole new PVE character just to capture the skills necessary for an Ele/Me Air Spiker for PVP(because that was what we were planning on doing)... and now he's ascended and in the Ring of Fire missions. Since I spent so much time building an elementalist, is there any way we can continue in a trend of Elementalist spike builds?

For instance... what about the very rarely used EARTH SPIKE build...

Obsidian Flame -- armor ignoring!!! Oooh baby...

the problem i have with the earth spike is its HUGE exaustion, if they keep on ressurecting you will be all dry and ready to be hung

I've got a tidbit... again. Today, I was PvP'ing just randomly, and I had one team where we were just mopping up completely. We must have won 6 in a row and our levels were only 8, 8, 5 and 4. There was one guy claiming the glory though; I'm pretty sure he was an elementalist. He had some spell called... "Phoenix?" Has anyone else used that? It was the first I'd ever heard of it, but if what he claims was true, it was working VERY well in those "n00b" arena battles.

Yes it is a fire skill not bad in PvE Fire ele not very effective in PVP. But great for farming :0).

Yup. I used that for a while, but now I just use fireball and inferno instead of Pheonix since they be more powerful

Here's the description for Phoenix:

A fiery phoenix rises at your location, striking adjacent foes for 7...91 fire damage, and flies out to your target, exploding on impact. This explosion strikes for an additional 15...75 fire damage.

It takes 15 ene and 3 seconds to cast. The trouble in the higher level arenas, especially GvG and Tombs, is that any team should be taking some type of interrupt. 3 second cast is easy to interrupt.
