You can turn a lot of the things that suck the resources up off.

But, I know what you are saying. You shouldn't have to make sacrifices on a $200 or $300 OS, and you shouldn't have to buy a super computer to run it.

Also, don't get 64-bit OS. 70% of software and games don't run them! (Based of my computer) The only advantage 64-bit OS gives you is 2x ram; 16GB-32GB ram. (On latest MBs)

When I get to use my computer in Christmas, I'll go back to XP than my current one; XP Pro 64.

That only applies to windows. Linux 64bit has worked flawlessly for me for over a year and a half and OSX seems to be doing pretty well also.

yes but there's even more that's on which you can't get rid of that still make it a pig..

ive had many issues with linux64bit personally with sound drivers, flash, and more than a few things so i cant say i endorse it.

sound...both my audigy 4 and crappy onboard sound work great, in fact I just threw in the audigy 4 a few days ago and as soon as I logged in the drivers were already active and the audigy was marked as the primary sound card...check
flash...ndiswrapper works great for any 32bit netscape plugins...check
java...already configured at installation
video drivers...import livna and the drivers install with no need to edit any files

Fedora has both the 64bit and 32bit packages available in the repository so you can install them side by side. I haven't run into any compatibility issues with any 32bit packages either.

can't vote in this one as there's no details on what you wanty for hte machine..:)
I didn't really know how to set it up for a real poll.

So the options, as you have probably noticed, are opposing brands; ie, should I get an ATi card vs an nVidia card, or AMD as opposed to an Intel porcessor.

So you can vote =P. Just provide reason as to which company I should run with. I would like for it to be a gaming computer. I am impartial as far as "what I want for the machine" goes.

Bottom line is I just want it to be reliable and to perform well.

Since Hescominsoon suggests Nvidia and Intel:

Intel Core 2 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache

GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB 512-bit GDDR3

ASUS MAXIMUS EXTREME LGA 775 Intel X38 Motherboard

Do you own Nvidia and Intel, Hescominsoon?

For the same price you can go AMD and have 4 cores, but the Core2 would likely spank it in a single threaded app. The only think I have against the Core2s is that they have a rather nasty hardware bug that allows a hardware buffer overflow such that data can be written into executable memory.

I was looking forward for AMD Phenom but...current MBs do not use the Phenom as it full potential.

CPU
Hyper Transports: 3600MHz

Current MBs
FSB: 2600MHz Hyper Transport

If SC2 can use my current PC specs (excluding Win XP 64) then I won't upgrade.

Motherboards can actually support the higher clocks, at least I know I can bump up the speed and multiplier of my interconnect. Of course you risk frying your northbridge in the process.

I have never had an Intel powered computer, since my Compaq Presario Celeron 566Mhz computer.

It was AMD all the way after that.
