CS Refresh Rate

Ok, I'm wondering if any of you know how to get your D3D or OpenGL refresh rate ABOVE 60 Hz. I know you can do in windows 98, because it uses the desktop setting, however i dont feel like using 98 because of the mouse feel, i prefer XP or 2k. Theres a refresh override in dxdiag but it doesnt seem to work.

Any help would be great, 60 Hz tears my eyes apart when i play cs for hours at a time...

I may be wrong but i dont think games use the windows refresh rate. They use whatever your fps rate is set to.

Anyway if you want higher than 60 fps in winXP you need to check the "disable values my monitor cant handle" option or whatever it is and go to the highest rate before you just get a black screen.

But for CS.. to tweak your fps you need the following commands.

net_graph (0,1,2,3) - shows a fps/lag/ping graph onscreen
net_graphpos (0,1,2) - moves it left/middle/centre.
cl_showfps 1 - shows the fps
fps_max X - sets the max fps to X (1-100)

If you want to increase your fps then lower resolution or find some commands that remove high quality smoke/shells/etc..

I hope this helps.

Your correct in what you first said there rizz, and ive done what you said second, however when i go into cs it drops back down to 60...which very annoying

Im fps average is in the 90s, but since the refresh rate is only 60, 60 is really what im getting. I know my video card and my monitor can handle 100Hz at 1152 x 864. The thing is, its not Counter-Strikes fault either, because in 98 it simply and very convieniently uses whatever the desktop is set to. XP and 2k to my knowledge, simply wont let be break 60Hz while running D3D or OpenGL drivers.

Certain games, like mafia, have the setting in the menu and will actually run higher if u set it to. However cs was made when 95 and/or 98 was out [right?]. Im guessing thats the reason they wouldnt put an override feature in...they didnt need it then. Theres no value to change in d3d.cfg either. Im thinking this is a no solution problem thanks to windows.

But if in wrong post up!!!

btw thanks for the console commands rizz

CS's default refresh rate is 60hz, but all you need is to set
fps_max 100
100fps is the max the HL engine can handle, so I see.

rizz's stuff is just errata that you can use for stats and such, but its really not needed.

Just to clear this up a bit, fps_X is not what im trying to figure out. Im trying to figure out how to get the monitors refresh frequency above 60 while running cs.

Sorry, shouldve mentioned this earlier

oh. then

right click on your desktop, and select "properties"
then click on the "settings" tab
at the bottom, click on "Advanced"
then, click the "Monitor" tab. there should be a drop-down menu there. check the box that says "hide modes this monitor does not support" first, and then choose the highest you can.

Thats what i do, but it still drops to 60 in CS. Ive done that under monitor settings, 3d card settings, AND directx settings, and i still get 60. What amorphus said only works for me in Win98, and maybe ME [at least for me].

i have noticed that in CS too. I use Xp and have tweaked the xp refresh rate to 72. However even when i put the fps_max to 100 in game it rarely goes above 60 fps. But i can stick it at 60 so i am not really bothered

i'm not sure this is what you're talking about Jeolius, but have you tried turning off your monitor's vsync? i did that and i'm getting 100 fps consistently

Maybe a few definitions would help here...

Monitor Refresh Un= to FPS

Hz = display frequency of monitor
^^^This is what im trying to set^^^^

FPS = Frames Per Second (behind the refresh)
^^^Although im getting fps close to 100, im

Sorry, that last post magically entered while i was typing it.....

....not physically getting any higher than 60,
because thats what the monitor frequency is

I wont be dissappointed if no one knows the answer to this, im pretty sure its a no-solution thing (i may be the only one who sees it as a problem) because cs was designed in 9x which simply uses the desktop refresh, and u were probably supposed to set it with that. This, however nice it was, does not work in 2k or xp. Thats why i think this is a no - solution issue.

thx guys

er. I get over 60 in Win2k. my XP system gets a cap on 30, but I'm working on that (I'm too lazy to troubleshoot it, thats all.

time for the 3F solution!

Fast Fix = Fdisk.

or just turn of v-sync, and run CS in OpenGL mode. see if that helps.

Ive made a recent discovery about this problem im having...

Im running an 8500 AIW 128DDR
(this is the one i want the higher refresh on)

I was messing around with the vid card settings on my dedicated server which has a geforce4 and there I found exactly what i was looking for...except on the wrong computer. nvidia has a monitor refresh override under its settings, and changing the number from default to 85 solved the prob.

Does anyone know if ATI has a utility for this?
I know for sure my 8500 is better than the geforce so im not willing to switch them over that.

Hmm.. never have delt with such things.. Maybe it might be the monitor that your using.. if im not mistaken.. Because i use 60Hz and i get no problemos with my Radeon 9000 Pro.. Try checking your monitor.. hope it helps..

Thats exactly the problem flash... the bigger the monitor at the higher res, the worse 60Hz looks. [I have a 19" viewsonic] 60Hz on a 14 inch doesnt bother me, but then u cant see anything....

Also 60Hz isnt causing any problems other than the fact that i get a headache staring at the flickering it makes.

Have you tried checking the ATI website for this "util"?
Also check in the forums of CSNation (csnation.counter-strike.net). It's a great place to get the answers for this rare tweaks you're looking for. Good luck!

I FOUND A UTIL!!!!
Its called the ATI Refresh Fix 0.9.9.7
So far ive gotten it up 75...nothing spectacular but worlds apart from 60.

I can now stare at my screen even longer!!!!!

and this thread can finally die....

Thansk Joelius.. I should try that if i get the same prob..

My monitors 17in ViewSonic VG700.. do u think 60Hz in 17in is good enough?

To answer your Q Flash, i was browsing cs nation like sun said to do, and there i found proof of my hunch that you cant get any higher than 60fps while running 60Hz. Evening if your reading 100 in net_graph, 60 is all your getting. Also, the higher the refresh, the easier it is on your eyes. (Just about anything ABOVE 60 is good enough for me). I maxed mine at 85 in OpenGL and 75 in D3D at 1152x854. CS runs visibly smoother, and I can stare at it much longer

.

Yeah I would recommend this, if you cant find it(i dont remember where I got it) i'll email it to you

Wow we finally got some action in these forums...good to see.
