Crying the Survivor Blues

Officer SOE/LoE/Where's "here"?
Anybody who is paying the least attention to GW knows there is a big change coming, or has come, to the Survivor title track. To be honest it bothers me a little having several ORS's (old rule Survivors) and seeing these changes. But a chat with Ursina, Raven, and my other half is altering my view point on these NRS's (new rule Survivors). Ursina is champing at the bit to give it a try and thinks that the try at a new title is worthwhile. Raven thinks that the NRS's will be harder to get because a lot of players will already have done all quests, missions, and capped most skills. And my other half quoted the Bible, specifically Matt 20:1-15, and capped it with Jesus was saying, "Get over it." Ok, Ok, now I've done my complaints so I will try and get over it, and just go for the repair job on Ursina and others. And Raven ya better be able to get me through FoW with no deaths a few times.:p

Personally, I'm looking forward to this being a viable option, specifically for my main character, who bit the dust early in the ascalon catacombs in pre-searing before I knew that "survivor" was even a title or one worth chasing. It actually makes me likely to invest a decent amount of time going forward in that character in the hopes of achieving the elusive GWAMM title.

That said, it's quite an accomplishment to go x amount of time/experience with 0 deaths, especially those who do it legitimately (without dwarven boxing or kathandrax hammers).

I have had some issues with it, personally. Be warned that I also have issues with boxing, so take that for what it is. Almost all of the titles I have done have been because I wanted to. I started out with survivor, because I thought it was an awesome and 1,337 challenge. I thought guardian sounded great, and hard mode kept me from quitting Guild Wars altogether; I'm sorry but normal mode is just too easy. There should be an easy mode (current normal), normal mode (current hard mode), and Norn mode.

Basically we have two issues at play here, though. One is achieving titles in lame ways. The other is being cool enough to get the game before I did, and not having an option for this title. I'm very glad I didn't have to max Kurz/Treasure/etc on my quest for GWAMM, and it stinks that others would have had to before this.

Personally I do not like how this was handled, because I don't feel it was the best way. I would have simply made Survivor account-wide. "But Ryan, what about people who do LDoA AND have survivor?" you ask? Make LDoA account-wide too.

Ultimately I suppose it really doesn't matter. People already have super-cheap ways to get survivor. Why not open it up for their main? I WOULD like to see something different done here, though. Maybe require more xp or don't count quest xp or something, I dunno...just some extra challenge on the second chance.

PS: I have 6 stacks of mobstoppers I'll be turning in this halloween to nab this title on several toons in about 30 minutes. I challenge you to find a lamer way.

Well, i for one am absolutely thrilled that they are allowing older characters to get this title. Scarlet and Amethyst will both be going for it as well as any other character I can manage to earn it on. Survivor is always a fun title to work on.

I understand the complaints from "the other side" but I just don't think they have a valid argument. Most of the time the complaint is that they've worked their butt off to keep their character alive and survived to bask in the glory of the title. They don't think it's fair that characters which have died should have the same title. I understand and agree up to a point. A made a suggestion a few years ago on Guru for a way to earn the title on older character. It was long and involved and any character earning the title by my route would definitely work for it!!!

However, here are my counter arguments of why I think our non-survivors should have a shot:

- This isn't a glorious title any more. If I see a survivor in town, I don't automatically think "Wow! Cool! He's a great player to have gotten 1,337,000 exp without dieing!!!" Nope. He may have played his way to the title or he may just have bought a bunch of hammers. There are too many lame ways to earn this title now. Hammers, boxing, hitting Stacey with a snowball a gazillion times, and mobstoppers (since you brought it up). If you want respect for the title, take out those options. If they aren't going to do that then let the rest of us have a shot at the title.

- Secondly, this isn't going to be a walk in the park for our main characters to achieve. Ok, well maybe for the Mobstopper King. I earn a lot of survivor experience with skill capping and quest/mission rewards. Both Scarlet and Amethyst have Legendary Skill Hunter and legendary guardian and have completed almost every quest in the game. Most of their options for experience are gone. I refuse to buy hammers or do mobstoppers. I'll earn my experience legitly, somehow. I think turning in books gives a fair amount. Yeah, another lame way, but at least it takes time. I'll be doing FoW runs at least for Amethyst. Not sure about Scarlet yet.

Prophet, we don't know yet the details of how the new survivor will work. All we know is that a clue was accidentally leaked into the Dervish build. Type /deaths. It used to say something like "You have died 3,443 times." Now it says "You have died 3,443 times and have earned experience since your last death." (note the extra space before "experience", a drop in variable will be there.) It's not counting up experience gained yet, but it will.

Many people have asked John Stumme about the change and he at first only answered with a cryptic "These are not the droids you are looking for" which most interpretted to be a Jedi mind trick trying to hide the upcoming change. He later said they are re-working many of the hard to obtain titles for the Embark Beach build. Survivor is changing. We assume it will be that we must earn 1,337,500 exp since our last death. We'll see.

He's strongly hinted as well that another big build will be released Thursday. Not sure that it's Embark Beach though. Perhaps Winds of Change?

Oh, I agree completely here. My thing isn't that you should be stuck without survivor, but moreso that account-wide survivor + LDoA would be the way to go. It's silly that my main went for it (or I could've deleted till he did) and yours didn't, and doing the title on an alt wouldn't help.

My two main beefs are now: the next whinefest will be on LDoA.
What about toons who did LDoA! Now they have two titles! It's not faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaair waaaaaaah!

Secondly, like you've already pointed out, lots of XP is hard to come by. It's not like you can just play through the story again, ascend, etc, ya know? This leaves running FoW all over again or boxing/etc. At least in FoW you're playing through ~10 times, but epic survivor options are pretty limited.

I think account-wide titles for survivor/LDoA would've fixed both of these issues. They could make KDs count as a death in boxing and fix hammers while they're at it. ;) Then again, I'm for pretty much every title being account-wide.

Edit to add: perhaps they are working on a "reset" character function. I doubt it, but that would be crazy, haha. It's not like it takes very long to get back through the campaigns.

I also wanted to add... "These are not the droids you are looking for" surely means that these are in fact the droids we are looking for.

Other comment is...this could all also be fixed by making KoaBD act like HoM as far as how titles are counted, and also be account-wide. That would help people stuck @ 29, and also please the "oh but you have to do it with THAT character!" crowd.

I've always found it odd in GW that titles were toon-based to begin with, anyway. So what, Raven signs on her ritualist, so all of the sudden hasn't actually done Guardian?

Guess I haven't been paying close attention to GW because I have no idea what you're talking about old survivor vs new survivor ... huh, what?

After the dervish update, typing /deaths gives you the message:
You have died X times, and have gained experience since the last update

This has sparked speculation on allowing old characters re-try for survivor, which seems like the obvious reason.

I like that they're re-allowing, but feel a better (and easier!) implementation would be to simply:
A) make Survivor and LDoA account-based, or
B) to make the Kind of a Big Deal title account-based; IE: add up all titles from all toons on the account.

Option B seems better - still let you accumulate titles but still show on all toons.

I don't know that I like account based titles much. Some are fine, like the treasure hunter and wisdom and the Kurzick/Luxon based ones. Your account has collected much treasure and done much for this faction, but individual accomplishments should be, well, individual.

I don't think a mule that has never left Shing Jea Monastery should wear Legendary Cartographer or an Assassin that dies every time he sees a monster wear Legendary Survivor just because the Warrior in the family is competent.

The HoM is account-wide so not getting all titles on your main won't hurt you in GW2. As long as one character has it, that's fine. I don't have to get survivor on Scarlet and Amethyst, but I want to. I already have a survivor in the hall though.

Also, if they do make a lot of titles account-wide, it goes against their business model, so I doubt they will. Some of us are working on titles on our 2nd or 3rd character. If it all goes account-wide, I've instantly maxed all my characters and have no reason to play.

I will be seriously disappointed if they make LDoA easier. I can understand, and encourage account-wide (if you ignore the "lore" aspect of that one character "defending" Ascalon). However, I worked hard on that title, even if it's just AFKing death leveling. It takes a crazy amount of time and dedication, plus, it's the last "rare" title out there. Make it account wide, don't make it any easier.

I completely agree with this sentiment; hence the suggestion for maybe just making KoaBD account-wide. I'm probably going to do Guardian again, and already having it would probably take some of the fun out. Ultimately it's a give and take, as no situation produces the best outcome for every event.

I don't know that they'd be making LDoA easier, my point was that these titles have always been mutually exclusive. The biggest complaint about survivor was that if you missed it, you had to do an extra title later and couldn't come back to that one.

Assuming you can have both of these on the same character now, people will now complain about "oh, but my assassin NEVER had a chance to do LDoA! LDoAers now have an advantage! Why do I have to max sweets or kurz or wisdom and they don't!" etc.

Folks are never happy. :)

And today we may find out who gets to whine the most, on today's update. Let me get a head start here. *WWWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*.:p

Wow, nice one Ursen! Could've sworn I heard a WAAAHmbulance driving by my work!

On the other hand, we may also get yet another week of hand-wringing and bewailing of our impending doom. The Live Team Lead also stated that the features build may not happen until the first week of march due to some other (unstated) thing causing the build's release to be delayed until then. That said, this other thing would now also be included in the build. I'm guessing it's some major piece of code that isn't easily separated/removed, so it's just less hassle to combine both in one build rather than risk this one part breaking some other major feature.

I could be hoping for some massive new reveal/addition and it turns out to be something like changing the costume of an npc.

Speaking of costumes, it'd be a nice twist if costumes attached to your NCSoft Account were usable in GW2. The closer it gets to GW2, the less mileage I'll get out of my costumes. Just sayin', random speculation.

Based on earlier releases, expect march 3rd, march 10th at the latest (mentioned first week of march, and gw1 releases come out on thursdays for non-bug-fixes or festivals).

It cannot be found anywhere - it is purely speculation. Raven capsulized it with:
Prophet, we don't know yet the details of how the new survivor will work. All we know is that a clue was accidentally leaked into the Dervish build. Type /deaths. I'm not even allowing myself to get excited about it until there is something ACTUALLY SAID about a change from the powers on high. Otherwise it is like worrying about GW2. When it happens, it happens.
