Conserving laptop battery power

I love how unix based addresses the hard disk, over 60% of the time my disk doesnt have to be spinning. If your system is using a page file because you dont have enough ram, say good bye to your battery life, as windows will slaughter the poor disk. If you are running mostly light programs, have enough ram for the job, and dont mind adjusting it between battery and performance, disable the page file in windows. unfortunately you ususally need 1.5-2gb of ram for this to work in windows. I linux you can run a system without swap as little as 512mb-1gb depending on the tasking.

Just to let everyone in the world know, adobe acrobat reader should be ranamed adobe couch potato, for how long it takes to load. use foxit reader, its light weight and loads in half a second.

vibrokatana: I'll point this out again, just in case you missed my other post on this subject. Please try and contribute to the topic. (That statement applies to all threads.) Page files and Adobe Reader have almost nothing to do with conserving battery power.

Thanks. =)

I am contributing to the topic, its just I tend to give generalized information that can be used my more then one type of person.

Yes, Talon. Thanks for the helpful link.

I didn't realize the integrated card reader takes up battery life even if there is no card inserted. My card reader can't read Compact Flash which is all I use, so it's fairly useless to me at the moment anyway.

It also gave me the idea to create a separate Hardware Profile for flying. I just wish there was some easy way to create a profile based on what services you want running. I don't want to manually turn them off each time. Perhaps I will write a little C# app to turn off the services for me.

I'll be on a business trip shortly and I may try out some of these ideas. I may decide to watch a DVD or do some coding.

hehe I managed to get nearly 4 and a half hours on the road. I could probably reach close to 5 hours if I used linux, I need to finish that install :(

That's on your Mac right? I was never really a fan of anything apple, but it's slowly growing on me... windows keeps crashing!

Also, my girlfriend has one of those really small Macs, and it has AMAZING battery life. But I'd consider an hour and a half amazing with my 45 minute battery time.

Funny story about my girlfriend... she wanted a nice carrying case for her computer. She actually picked out the case she wanted FIRST, and then found a computer that fit (it also had to be a mac). Sometimes I just have to sit back and say wow. Oh, and just a note: she never uses her case. :-P

Macs are nice machines, the transition for me was really easy as I dont have a favorite app (besides firefox, but that is cross platform :P). The desktop-proc laptops really need to go. So many people hate laptops because of them.

What is horrible are the "budget" laptops with a celeron desktop proc and a 6cell lithium... they should aptly be renamed "budget desktop with a built in screen and ups"
