Computer is showing its age...

That amount of ram is just gross. Id buy the spares off of you, but my mobo doesnt support it.

Alrighty... so I ordered my motherboard, PSU and RAM yesterday.

BUT I accidentally ordered 2 4gig packs of ram... I only wanted one... Newegg's policy on memory is non-refundable, 30 day return. So I cannot use all 8 gigs of ram due to the fact I will run XP 32-bit.

I can still install all 8 gigs, but the OS will not recognize (or use?) all 8 gigs, correct?

Where or how can I get a cheap version of vista so I can use all 8 gigs? I looked around on newegg and got really confused by the OEM suites and the "real" vista DVDs which cost tons of money...

no you will see 3.1-3.5 gigs at the most.

I decided I would just keep the extra ram and send in the mail in rebates for them.

$35 DDR-1066 ram is a steal. - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227298

I will slap them in there and just wait until I can get a 64-bit OS.

I seriously doubt I will use up all of 4 gigs, lol, and it is weird to think I will have 8 gigs of ram...

How they got me is I went and put the ram in my cart, then I went back to look at their packaged deals and added a deal with the ram and a 600W PSU.

Viola, 2 sets of ram. Was too excited/tired/relieved to think to check the amounts of each, and despite ordering too much ram, the total price was still acceptable to me.

you DO have a way to access all of your ram for free..dual-boot a 64 bit Linux..:)

Is that based on the Motherboard?

When I put 4 gigs, I got 2.9 gigs.

But now, I put 3 gigs, I still got 2.9 gigs.

What Motherboard would give you a minimum of 3.1 gigs?
it's because of how windows allocates memory and the fact that 32 bits equals 4 gigabytes...there's no way around simple math.

I consider PAE a non issue due to the performance penalty since pae is simply taking a block of ram and using it as page memory to go over the 4 gig limit...remember emm386.exe? That's all pae really is. 32 bits equals 4 gigabytes no matter what pae or any other funkified access scheme.

Sounds like I need Windows Server 2003 SP1, Datacenter Edition... :D

I am using the new computer now and it is nice... I can't quite grasp the fact it is mine, yet.

I right-clicked My Computer and it said I only have 3.5GB of memory in there and I accidentally laughed really loudly.

I am downloading Bioshock from steam and installing Warhammer. Test drive here I come!

LOL?!

Keep up with your server operating systems...it's on 2008 now ;) (and 7 shortly)

I went and bought and OEM Vista Home Basic 64-bit edition at MicroCenter for $100 the other day and installed it. I have all 8 gigs to use now AND [later after the install I realized] I had DirectX10, lol >_<.

I can run Bioshock and Warhammer simultaneously with alt tab.

Craziness.

I also can run all games at the highest settings.

I love it.

That's good, your enjoying it. ;)

Curious though, does it use the full 1066mhz on your ram?

Cause mine only uses 166mhz out of 400mhz.

yes because of his processor choice. The ram clock in tied to the fsb clocl. HIs cpu is going to run that at 1066..<G> Your's is running slower most likely due to the fsb of the cpu being limited to 166which equates to 266 DDR

dude...Vista is all about DX10!

Yep, when I MB on a single machine I'm running 3 copies of WoW (in windowed mode and split up on a single monitor) at full settings on each with a boatload of mods...and no sputters whatsoever.

There's no love like 64 bit love :D

/me opens a can of SPAM!!!!

Glad to hear that your computer runs smoothly. I've been playing with mine tweaked my 2.66 Ghz to 3.6 and passed Othos, but it crashed last night for some unknown reason so I dropped it down again. Just need to find a MB that can handle the voltage (got to love liquid cooling) in a warm bedroom my cpu never peaks 38C even overclocked and stressed tested.
