"Comfort" games?

Most, if not all of us, are familiar with the term comfort food. In short, it's food that's simple yet satisfying.

I think most of us also have "comfort games"--games that we replay or return to occasionally because they're familiar, easy to play, and allow us to push away the pressures of life for a short time.

With the recent release and financial success of Mega Man 9, I've been thinking about some of my "comfort games" that I often return to: Super Mario World (especially the first few levels of World 2), New Super Mario Bros., Super Street Fighter II, and, most recently, Katamari Damacy.

What are your favorite "comfort games"?

team fortress 2, its easy and familiar to me, and theres not much better than to just chill and 2fort on my favorite server with my buddies.

and peggle extreme:)

PC

- Doom II
- Starcraft: Brood War
- Solitaire
- Pinball

PS2

- Ace Combat Zero
- Marvel Vs Capcom 2
- Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2; Elimination rounds
- Metal Slug Anthology; Metal Slug 6
- Capcom Classic Collection; Street Fighter II, Super Ghouls N' Ghosts
- Capcom Classic Collection 2; Block Block, Captain Commando, Quiz & Dragons.

Actually, I'm going back to Starlancer, as I like them alot, such as Strike Commander, Decent: Freespace and Freelancer.

StarCraft: Brood War
Command & Conquer (I generally play the whole series up till RA 2 when I'm in the mood)
TES III: Morrowind

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age, for the GBA (It was the only reason I even bought the GBA).

Bubble Bobble is great fun

Little Big Planet is going to end up being my biggest comfort game ever though. I agree with an article I read, in that it's just delightful and good fun.

smash brothers,megaman x collection, starcraft

Other then that I would have to vote for breakout. You have no idea how many hours of class time wasted playing breakout and gltron networked with a friend (we managed to get an 8 person game going once, it was awesome). The old 2d puzzle/quest/shooter games can lead to hours of entertainment without breaking the bank (there are MANY open source games that are enjoyable in this category).

I tend to put every FPS out of the "casual" category, as it is too competitive. Also IMO FPSs have a higher tendency to lead to an adrenaline addiction. This is also why I hate Eve Online, as you are literally betting several weeks/months/years worth of work. If you don't sweat when you ship is warp scrambled and your on the verge of loosing it, you're probably comatose. While TF2 is pretty relaxing, it can get frustrating pretty quickly, especially on bad maps.

It depends on what comfort I need...

If I'm frustrated/angry: Ninja Gaiden 2.

If I'm lonely: Halo 3.

I guess those are the only emotions I feel that push me into gaming!

ehh..WoW...i mean, you can blow hours mindlessly while munching on comfort food and it's just total win :)

i tried getting back into SC:BW a while ago...but i was just so terribad for not having played in so long that it was far from comforting =/

I'd also have to list Starcraft: Brood war as one of my comfort games.
And I would add SimCity2000, but I honestly don't have a copy of that game anymore :(

Half Life 2 and any of its expansions.
Harvest Moon Magical Melody for Gamecube.

Thats all.

SimCitys are awesome comfort games!

Well.. its sorta related to the OP. Mainly I play Guild Wars, but when I need a break from that I usually head to the Total War games (really excited about Empire btw) or to the older RTS games like StarCraft or Total Annihilation.
