Class struggles...

Hey everyone! I never seem to post here...

I had a question because wow.com recently posted this article on the state of the druid (linky: http://www.wow.com/2009/07/09/shifting-perspectives-why-or-why-not-to-play-a-druid/), and it's really reignited my feelings toward the class. My first character was a druid, but I shoved him aside in place of a hunter because they're captivatingly easy to level.

Now though I'm seriously considering switching back to my original toon, but I wanted some advice for two reasons: First, I really only have the time to dedicate to one character, and second, I generally play solo.

The hunter has been great for the second part, but I always hear that druids are best for casual/one-toon players because they are hybrids, and I've become incredibly indecisive. Thoughts? Thanks!

druids rock! I did feral to 70 (back in BC) then when the expansion hit, I did boomkin to 80. I could AoE grind, kill single targets before they even reached me, and I could even solo some group quest bosses. If you want to go completely solo then go feral and you could solo everything. I just liked Boomkin cuz I could heal and dps instances if I needed to. Its a personal choice of spellcaster vs. melee at that point. Hit me or any of the other druids up if u want more info! GL with ur new uber toon ;)

I fully agree with McFierce's McWisdom!

I'd add:
1) Forms really do make a difference. When you make it to 68, flight form is HUGE. Even aquatic form is a nice gift in those occasions where you find yourself swimming for extended periods.
2) Dual-spec (once you get to level 40, available for 1k gold) is a game-changer for druids as it really does allow you to be fully capable in two diametrically different roles with all 4 to choose from: tank vs. healer vs. melee dps vs. range dps. What I've done is spec resto/boomkin. Resto gives me the best shot at gettign in a group or raid (and not make a total hash job of performance for the group, as well) on those rare occasions when I get to do an instance, but mostly I'm boomkin which is great for grinding and questing.
3) Even if you only build two specs into the talents, you really have 4 separate sets of gear to build up ... with good gear, you can be a decent whatever as a druid even if you're not specced for it [not for raids, but definitely normal instances and some heroic maybe]. Getting 4 sets of gear takes a lot of bag space and takes a lot of time! But makes it less likely that you "dead end" your toon.

I was feral for 1-60 (when I leveled Gilga, like 4 years ago ... yikes), then switched to resto to raid with Redeemed. Then I stuck with it from 61-70 (not because I'm a masochist, but because I'm a moron). Then still resto to 72 before Tree and Wall knocked some sense into me, then boomkin to 80, and boomkin/resto since.

Like McFierce says, both feral and balance work for leveling.
Cat has the advantages of not needing to replenish mana. But you have to shift out of form to heal yourself which I found could be a drag. Also, feral has the advantage of giving you bear spec to go to which can be clutch in soloing group quests.
Moonkin has the advantage of some peachy AOEs and the armor bonuses make you durable enough to not die every time you aggro 3 mobs. But you don't get moonkin form until you're relatively high level. But if you're effectively going caster form, you can plow through mobs and heal yourself as you go ... especially thanks to hots that mean you don't even have to slow down. Only issue is mana.

As a guy who's leveled a dps mage to 80, a prot pally to 80, a holy priest to 71, and a DK to 72, I can say druid is probably one of the most fun toons I've played! I've tried rogue, hunter, lock, and warrior alts, and I seem to lose interest in them around level 20-25. Not so with my druid - I've leveled him to 45 without stopping, and have still not lost interest! The different forms are lots of fun, and it seems druids are always OP at something :)

Hope you have fun with your druid!

I have nothing to add for the hunter...they were boring imo. If you like a pet, make a lock ....much cooler. I would definitely level your druid. Mine is a 65 feral druid and a lot of fun.

Maybe I'm just bitter than my first hunter pet "Cuddles" ran away. Just because I didn't play the toon for 3 years is NO EXCUSE!

Hunters are limited to one thing: Dps.

Druids can do DPS, Heal, and even Tank. You have so many more options as a druid, and will get into groups much much easier with the versatility.

Yeah hunters suck... Oh wait, that's the only 80 I have rofl.

Just kidding, I love playing my hunter. And I helped Xymnas gear up in BC and I loved playing a Druid. It's awesome not being limited to one thing.
