Christmas Caroling

oh, could we also sing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and/or "The Little Drummer Boy" ? Those are two of my favorites.

I could also play a shepherd with my ranger character. He has cool shepherd-like druid armor too!

Oh, also "What Child is This?" is a fav of mine too!

My Ranger has Druid armor as well as a beard. He'd be perfect as a sheperd. I'll need to change my dye though. I use blue on him because his pants look like he's wearing blue jeans when I do. What's a good dye mixture for a tan or brown color?

I know a variation of drummer boy!

[baritone voice]Geeet a job, you bum bum bum bummmm
money don't grow on trees you bum bum bum bummmm[/baritone voice]

Whoops, heh. I suppose that THAT wouldn't work.... (btw that song isn't directed at anyone)

Actually, I think the song list is kind of meager so far. "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" is the best one so far, because it actually has a distinct gospel message. In fact, as far as hymns are concerned, some of the best gospel messages can be found in the Christmas hymns.

Drop "Away in a manger." Here's why: if you've ever heard the words or sang them yourself, you know that it is a fairly inaccurate description of what probably actually happened on Christmas. "The little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes?" Come on, he was a baby. He's gonna be screaming and pooping just like every other baby boy. As much as that song presents the first Noel as one of the gentlest nights in history, i believe that the night Christ was born was a very tumultuous night. Obviously, if there was no room for them in the Inn, there was plenty of busyness. Anything that mentions that Joseph and Mary found a stable outside of harm's way to give birth to Jesus would have probably been very inaccurate. I think they found a manger just outside of "the Inn," probably in an alley behind it, where people from the Inn were keeping their horses. It's good to remember that the world Jesus was born into was not a clean one. There was literally crap everywhere, a perfect metaphor for the hearts of man.

Drop "We Three Kings." Nowhere in the Bible does it mention that there were 3 kings... or even 3 wise men. It mentions "wise men" coming from the East, and it briefly mentions the kinds of gifts they brought the young Jesus. Because only three specific gifts were mentioned, the writer of this song along with many MANY other people felt that it stood to reason that there were only three actual men there...

I think you all probably have heard all this before. I don't mean to throw "that's not what the Bible says" stuff at you... I just think we could look for more conventional hymns of Christ's birth to sing:

"O come, O come Emmanuel, and Ransom Captive Israel,
who mourns in lowly exile here until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel."

"O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray.
Cast out our sin, and enter in. Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord, Emmanuel!"

"Fall on your knees! O hear the Angels' voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born!"

I am a big fan of Little Drummer Boy I know it is not in the Bible but I think we sing some Carols that people know would be better than ones not as popular Just my two cents

But if we're a Christian Guild, what would be the point of caroling if not to spread the gospel? Caroling should be fun, and it will be, but we don't need to compromise the gospel just so that people recognize the songs we're "singing..." I'm sure people will recognize "O holy night," "O little town of Bethlehem," and "O Come, O come Emmannuel," the three songs I quoted above.

I like those too. I was not saying we should Sing songs about Santa Heck no but about our Lord and Savior, if Away in the Manger affends you than I vote not to sing it no reason to affend another brother in Christ.

"Feliz Navidad"'s gotta go on that playlist somewhere, right? :)

My two cents: I don't think we're compromising anything by singing "inaccurate" Christmas songs. The point is that we're Christmas caroling in a virtual game world which will (hopefully) be decorated for the holidays. That's actually a pretty silly and fun thing we you think about it. :) Regardless of what we're singing, it's going to generate attention and people will hang out, ask questions, *join in* even, and find out about the ToJ/SoE.

But I don't have a strong opinion either way, so whatever the play list is, I think it's a great idea and I'm hoping I'm in town/near my computer when ever this is scheduled.

(PS - LA...that's Lion's Arch? How much further beyond Yak's Bend is that?)

Short answer is 3 missions and a few explorable areas to fight through. If you want someone to run you to LA around the missions, I am sure we could arrange that as well.

I'm all for fun and silly, but i think especially during a time when people are changing "Christmastime" to "The Holidays," we should hold to what Christmas is all about. As fun and silly as it will seem to some people, if it's done right it will be actually pretty impressive. If people notice that we are actually doing it in synchronization and each lyric is being spoken by the next person in line, that's pretty awesome.

This seems like the perfect opportunity to share the gospel with people. How often does that happen in-game for this guild? As far as I know, we're just as competitive as any other guild, and we don't necessarily spend the time to "share Jesus with others" like we claim we do. I understand the concept of "playing Guild Wars the way a Christian would," and not slandering others, calling them n00bs, and being overall helpful to people. But this is a time to really be different.

It will be awesome whether we do it as a joke or not. Might as well be serious about it, because people will be impressed either way.

Let's set a date then.

By the way, I just read the entire Terms of Use and EULA we had to sign to be able to play GW.

The Terms of Use and EULA DO NOT prevent us from sharing the Gospel openly. They only prevent anti-____ speech, not pro-___ speech.

Still, when we spread the Good News, we need to be careful about it. Choose your words very carefully-- try to get the message across in such a way that no one could interpret it as hate speech. (I realize that when you get to the part about sin, some people will be offended no matter what. Remember to "preach the truth in love.")

However, don't lose the message for the sake of being nice! There's a fine line that you have to walk due to our PC society and the intolerance of Christianity-- in the name of tolerance!

This is good, but, we also need to tie in the fact that we play this way because we're Christians, not just because we're nice players.

A simple thing to do to accomplish this, is to always tell people "God Bless you all" as you leave PUGs or after Arena battles.

Or name your characters from Biblical sources. My monk is named "Elisha bar Shabat." Which is the 'legal' name for Elisha from the Bible (means Elisha son of Shabat). If I had thought of this for my initialy character, my Ranger would be named something different as well. ;)

Anyways, my point is, that we can do simple things on a daily basis to put Christianity and God out there in the game, and we can do so, in an unobtrusive way.
Basically. we don't need to be on the corner of the bridge in LA, spamming John 3:16. Although that does sound slightly funny.... ;) :D

well... uh.. all my guys are named after books of the bible...

glad I did my part. now I can go and pwn those noobs.

OOOH. That's what it means... I was wondering who that was and what it meant

Spirit of Elijah Christmas Carol List
I will look up words and write up a "script" based on words from: http://www.cyberhymnal.org/top/topics.htm?xmas.htm
We will have 4-8 "singers" per song singing a numbered line of each song. If we have more than the specified number for a particular song, the others can take turns sitting out a song and emote along with the group.

We will meet on Wednesday night starting at 8pm eastern and continue through the evening moving through districts of Lion's Arch. Since my kids won't be asleep until about 9pm eastern, if someone could volunteer to lead until I join you, I would appreciate it.

I also recommend that as many of us as possible get onto TS so that we can enjoy some fellowship while we "sing"

Here are the songs that have been discussed and I assume are acceptable to all:

  • Joy to the World
  • Hark the Herald Angels Sing
  • O Come, O Come Emmanuel
  • O Little Town of Bethlehem
  • O Holy Night

Other suggestions I found that were not discussed. Unless anyone has objections, I will include these as well:
  • Angels We Have Heard on High
  • The First Noel
  • Go Tell it on the Mountain
  • God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
  • What Child is This?

Songs that have had objections raised and will not be included in our songlist:
  • Away in a Manger
  • We Three Kings

If there are other suggestions or objections to anything on the list, feel free to post them here.

EDIT: If anyone needs help reaching Lion's arch in time for the event, let us know as soon as possible as well to arrange an escort.

caroling tonight - 9pm eastern

Unless someone wants to lead at 8pm tonight, we will have to delay starting caroling tonight until 9pm. I will be adding words to this thread, so I recommend that you have GW in windowed mode with the browser running in the background so you can cut and paste your line.

Please gather at the Guild Hall just before 9pm and log onto TS. I will open with prayer and we can then move on to LA or where-ever else we want to go.
