Christian Emo?

There's Anberlin, but I don't think there's a song on the "Never Take Friendship Personal" CD that speaks of God. It sounds like they're occupied with other things.
"Paperthin Hymn" kinda does:

You never know what temporal days may bring
So Laugh, love, live free, and sing
When life is in discord
Praise ye the Lord

Oh well. :D

I'm noticing that with a lot of the Tooth and Nail bands and other indie ones, as well. I'm starting to question just what is used to designate these bands as Christian. Most of the cds don't even mention the word "God." Kinda odd if you ask me.

Would anyone class Blindside as Emo?

I haven' heard much of their new stuff, I was more into their Screamo a couple years ago(King of the Closet! wooot) so their new stuff came as a suprise.

I want to be supportive of the bands that are "crossing over" into the secular world by being subtle with their lyrics, I believe some of them truly do have good intentions in trying to reach the lost. With some of the other bands, it's hard to get the impression they're sincere about their faith.

Skillet still does shows in churches. The concept for their "Savior" music video is a little perplexing though.

Well they play on Christian Stations A whole lot... Well like skillets cd that doesnt ever say God you know what they are meaning in the song like in Energy and Cycle Down
Just because they dont metion God doesnt mean they arnt Christian.... I am in total support of all those bands I am totally sick of these radio stations that are to slow and play old school songs they need stations to reach Me, Us People of This Millienum...

I'm no expert on genres, but Blindside was never screamo. They metalcore I think, or maybe nu-metal. I dunno, it's not important anyway.

About Christian bands and stuff, the majority of popular "christian bands" these days are just christians in a band with a positive message, not neccessarily praising the Lord, sometimes not even mentioning Him. I don't really have a problem with that kind of thing, as long as they are christians, and are in the christian music industry, I'll listen to them. I prefer a strong in your face message, but I really don't mind a message that doesn't mention God. I say Christian artists should still be allowed their art, they should write whatever they feel without a bunch of old people coming up to them and saying "Hey! Your music isn't praising God! You're surely headed straight for the pit! Repent!". Anyway, I'm rambling, either way, I don't care, I like christian music regardless of wether they specifically mention God or not.

Well, their official line is that they aren't a Christian band, but they are Christians.
I'm surprised
I guess if your a christian you don't have to make your band a christian one. I'm not going into computer networking as a great testimony to Christ. I plan on doing the best job I can and giving my all into what I do as Christ calls. Hopefully I can influence the community in whatever job I get, but I don't have to start a cheezy company like "Overflowing waters networking ministry"
If Anberlin are really christians I think I like them now.

Do you know for sure that they are really christians and not just "I always went to church so that makes me a christian" ?

I am not saying that we shouldn't listen to them. I simply challenging the idea that bands who don't even mention God or their faith in their lyrics should be called "Christian music." It isn't Christian music just because they have a positive message. That's called "positive music," and there are plenty of secular bands that do the same. So if "Christian music" is defined by the faith of the band members and not the lyrics and message of their songs, I have a big problem with that.

Well that's pretty much what it is. Just go to toothandnail.com, half of the bands there have lyrics like anberlin where they don't sing about God all the time, some not at all, but who's to say they're not Christian bands? Christians making music is Christian music, some bands just sing about their faith more than others. Anyway, I don't think anyone mentioned Mae on this thread, they're christian emo I think.

Ok, I've said this before in other threads, but I think it applies here also so I will repeat it as succintly as possible.

God made everything.
Therefore, God made music.
When he was finished creating, He looked at His creation and declared it good.

Therefore, music, is by default, good.

Not all music today is good. Some people taint their music with lyrics contrary to what God declares is good. But in absence of these taints, music is still good. Instrumental music declares the glory of God just as much as music with vocals praising Him.

If a secular band writes an instrumental song, it praises God. They may not intend for it to, but by making another way for everybody to see something God made, they glorify God.

I highly suggest a read of Addicted to Mediocrity by Franky Schaeffer. There's a review of it here that summarizes a few of the basic thoughts in the book.

^ heh, I guess since were not in the RD forum I'll keep my thoughts to myself on that one ;)

no no, I understand. I guess I was more monologueing because usually I am quick to judged other peoples "christainess" if you will based on if they look the part. Ive changed my mind on the matter because I would be no different than band members who are christian, and don't start a christian band.

But you do understand my point. Creed was largely referred to as Christian and even though some of their lyrics were faith-based, they still used cursing in some of their songs. These aren't huge issues, but Christians today are watched very carefully by non-Christians who are just waiting for any opportunity to call them a hypocrite.
