Cheapest way to replace a broken cell phone and not extend a contract?

att and t-mobile are theo nly gsm carriers in the US.

that would be a misnomer. there are several GSM carriers, at&t and tmobile just get more advertising. Jolt mobile, airlink and boost mobile are GSM carriers as well. .

Goblit for what your talking about that is for CDMA phones with verizon or sprint. The cool thing with GSM is you ahve a little sim card, kind looks like a smaller SD card that holds all of your information and you can swap it in and out of different phones and usually it will work.

I'm going to vouche for Kidan's stuff too, and agree with him, LG for sure, motorola hesitant yes. I dont like LG personally though because they usually have horrible batteries.

Oh, I had forgotten about this thread, but since it's been bumped, I wanted to post again to say that my dad ended up getting a new phone and extending the contract.

It's unfortunate, but my dad decided it was the least of all evils. He and my mom don't have the same issues with AT&T as my wife and I do and they're not as demanding of their technology.

Im not sure if it will work with every phone or not but I used an AT&T sim card in a t-mobile phone one time and didn't have any problems. Again Im not 100% certain it would work with all t-mobile phones. But I've purchased several AT&T phones off ebay at reasonable prices so it may be your best bet.
