CGA Teamspeak Server Clarification and myth dispelling

Hescominsoon

CGA\TOJ Hosting Manager
Myth/Fact: The quality isn't as good as vent.
Reality: In the past the CGA/TOJ ts server was hosted on a home internet connection. This severely limited the amount of bandwidth available. The current ts server resides on the same machine as the cga website. It's a dual processor mahcine hooked up to a 10 megabit dedicated connection in a datacenter. The TS server now has the 25 kilobit option enabled for all channels if you want it. It still may not be as good as vent..but you don't sound like a tin can either. If you do find somebody with a CA by their name(that a channel admin) or SA(server admin) and they can raise the room's codec to the 25 kilobit level for you.

Myth: TS is unstable.
Fact: The servers ts was operated on were unstable. The current machine does not go offline except for maintenance runs or severe issues at the data center. The data center has not had any issues affecting the server except for once and we were warned in advance.

Myth: TS can't handle more than 20 people
Fact: TS can handle hundreds depending on hardware and bandwidth availability. With 100 slots we will use no more than 4-5 megabits of our bandwidth. The CGA site doesn't use even 500 kilobits of bandwidth so we have plenty to spare. The cga website right now doesn't even make the server realize it is there. Linux uses load ratings to determine the work the system is doing. A load of 2 would (roughly) signify both cpus are at 100% utilization all the time. Right now the server load averages .08.

Past Fact: Previous admins acted immature and kicked people around for fun
Present Fact: We have one dedicated admin, stc95, for the TS server. Also since i am the server operator for the mahcine itself(the Linux part which runs the ts server and the forums) i also have direct high-level access to the ts server. Tek of course also has the highest levels of access to the server. If at anytime somebody is acting stupid all you have to do is pm stc, tek or myself(in that preferred order)..give the details of who was messing around and their names and they will be instantly demoted if not banned outright. TS server admins are held to a higher standard and if they break that standard they suffer the appropriate consequences.

This is just a start list. As i find more thing i'll add to this thread. Right now we aren't using 10% of the TS server. Give it a try. Get 20-40-60 folks on it and beat on it.

I don't know. Not when i have been on it since the move to it's current location. You can see the day's user history here.

So are "admin wars" immune to the rule of power abuse? I've seen it done for fun during nights for Heroes' Ascent. It's more of for fun, but what if someone who doesnt know that reports said admins to you or tek and has only partial information?

We'll do an investigation of course..but it looks immature to have admins blowing the server up and having "regular" users get caught in the crossfire. There's several old threads in toj about admin abuse going too far to the point of tek himself calling the server a temporary cesspool. We really don't want to approach that kind of irresponsibility again.

Question: Has there been more than 20 people?

Guild wars chapter by itself on a few occasions has had up to 21 people and another few occasions with the the few WoW ts users up over 25 to my knowledge.

I'll also add that I have TS admin and can take care of stuff if needed (i have kicked many a noise makers who delight in yelling obscenities at christians)

Sounds like fun.

Anyone up for a scheduled TeamSpeak stress test/party night?

Set a date batman!
A date, eh?

Um, let's say...next Thursday, August 21. People can visit the server all day as their schedule allows, even if they just want to idle in the Lobby channel.

If you are talking about other people in other channels having to listen to you log on and of on and off over and over on the vent server for fun as you kick each other, then that is quite frankly unacceptable to me and exactly what Heiscominsoon is talking about above.

But it's fun!

Anyone want to try out mumble? I absolutely hate teamspeak (the OSX and Linux versions suck ). Mumble runs naively on the big 3 operating systems (no X11 wrapper for OSX, yay).

I'm pretty sure you can turn off those notifications on TS.

Drat..I'll be gone at Cedar Point all day...can I be AFK and still count? lol

Ok so we have 4 channels for the test. More can be added.

TeamSpeak Testing Academy
  1. Speex 16.3 Kbit- Normal
  2. Speex 19.5 Kbit- Better
  3. Speex 25.9 Kbit- Betterer
  4. GSM 16.4 Kbit- Best

I'm pretty sure that's how it goes in terms of voice quality. But I'm not sure so HCS if you can fix anything with that statement above please do and I'll change it in TS.

actually gsm isn't the best..

  1. Speex 16.3 Kbit- Normal
  2. GSM 16.4 Kbit - about the same as above
  3. Speex 19.5 Kbit- Better
  4. Speex 25.9 Kbit- best
GSM's quality is debatable. I made it available due to some folks saying it sounds better than speex. speex though have better quality and use less cpu than gsm does.

yes you can turn off the notifications inside the ts2 client...however the admin kickfest is something we frown upon and watch out for..
