Brink is approaching fast. In fact, its official release is just four weeks away.

To celebrate, Splash Damage have revealed the system specs, and confirmed that the game will be using Steamworks (not the alternative we’re not going to mention because it upsets us too much).

Thanks to Steamworks, we’ll be enjoying the following features come release:

Steam Achievements
VOIP
Challenge Leaderboards
Valve Anti Cheat
Dedicated Servers
Friends Support (including invites and joining session in progress)
Steam Cloud (for save data)

Here are the cold, hard specs for your viewing pleasure:

Via PC Gamer. So when you getting it, Tek? >.>

Dude, I'm buying it as soon as it comes out. I've been following it since you first posted, and I'm really excited about it.

I'm watching it, but not sure about spending 60 bucks for it... looks really good, but I may wait for a sale.

Not until it goes on sale and not until I can make sure it won't be another flash in the pan multiplayer game.

I'm also waiting to see if they mean REAL dedicated servers or "rental-only" dedicated servers like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty Black Ops. Having managed servers for several popular first-person shooters, I can say BFBC2 and CoDBO are horribly limited when it comes to "dedicated server" support. While I still have issues with Valve for making low-stakes gambling available to minors in the form of TF2's crate/key system, I have to admit their dedicated server support is still the best. And considering how often their updates break Sourcemod and how terribly, terribly finicky Left 4 Dead 2 servers are, that's a sad statement.

TL;DR: Real dedicated servers or go away.

EDIT: And my notebook probably won't be able to run the game at a decent framerate anyway. Not a great loss, considering my single-player backlog is a mile long and I'm still getting plenty of mileage out of TF2 and L4D2 and hope to start playing SC2 more often again soon. And that's just on the PC side.

I loved Quake Wars (also created by Splash Damage), so I am very intrigued by this game. Unfortunately, I doubt my current system will be able to tackle it. I hope they release a demo for the PC.

Welcome to the CGA Tod1d!

I'll wait for the reviews. If I did buy it, it would be for Xbox.
But...it's a first-person shooter that will also be released on the PC and stands a chance of not being a crapulent console port.

/confused

I don't have the computer to run these newer games. Later in the year I'll build a new one though.

Ah. That does make sense then. Especially for someone who can tolerate twinsticks to play a FPS (i.e. not me).

Joystiq posted a preview of Brink, which I've read about halfway through and am about to return to reading. The game looks promising so far, but I can't see myself paying full retail price for a major game release in this day and age.

After reading that, i'm happy. I now need to upgrade my computer, and i'll be most likely buying it. It sounds like something valve would put out. It actually seems to be bringing something new and worthwhile to the table.

I'll have to rebuild my computer before i can play :D Will be listing an ipod on ebay soon, so some extra money will help me get it done fast :)

Wow, impressive. They also have several videos on the site, makes the game look so much cooler. There's an interview on balance too, sounds like they're looking out for the nubs (like sniper rifles being named "long rifles" and being unable to 1-shot things).

What is the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server allows anyone to run multiplayer servers for the PC version of Brink. As the server is standalone, it does not require a full version of Brink to be installed and is completely free.

Where will I be able to get the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server will be available for download via Steam prior to release. Once the server is available, you can simply browse to the Tools tab in your Steam client and grab it from there.

Release a demo so I can verify that my computer will be able to run the game at a passable framerate and if my machine is up to the task, I believe you have yourselves a sale, Bethesda.

I would like to meet the person responsible for the decision to include real dedicated server support for Brink so I can give him a man-hug. Seriously, this is the best news about an upcoming PC FPS I've heard in ages. Come to think of it, it may be the only good news I've read about a non-Valve FPS in years. (Sorry, Battlefield and Call of Duty PC fans, but let's face it, EA and Activision hate you and your computer.)

EDIT: Wait, no, I forgot about Natural Selection 2 for a moment. My apologies to Unknown Worlds.

I had hoped for great things when I read that Paul Wedgwood, Splash Damage's CEO and Brink's Director, used to run a Team Fortress clan. Given this good news about dedicated servers, I think I can safely say that hope was not unfounded.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was an under-appreciated game. As long as Brink isn't a lousy console-to-PC port (and real dedicated server support strongly suggests it won't be), I wish Splash Damage wonderful success with Brink. They deserve it; they make good games.

EDIT: Oh, and since Brink is going to feature real dedicated server support, Tribe of Judah members can start talking amongst themselves about starting a Brink chapter any time. I'll just need at least one person to step up to lead a new chapter and I'd prefer to have a second to help manage a dedicated server, provided members are willing to cover the expense of running one.
