-Is blizzard concerned with the addictive nature of their game? (Are any MMORPG makers/producers?)

-Is it fair for the family to sue Blizzard?

-Do you think the Chinese goverment is being fair by allotting 3 hours of game play?

I can relate to the addiction most mmorpg's have. The demands needed to rise above the rest are extreamly difficult, often drawing you to spend countless hours playing. There were times when I would play for along time and when I was done I would walk away for five minutes and say 'Wow. What just happened there?'.

My Xfire feed stands as a reminder to me of those times. haha.

Oh and...

Some analysts estimate the game is raking in more than $30 million per month in basic subscription fees.

30x12 360

Lets say the game remains 'popular' for 5 years.
12x5 1.8 million dollars

That's subscription sales alone.

Blizzard Entertainment developed the game and works with The9 in China as the local distributor. The9 already posted second-quarter revenue of $6.7 million, up from first-quarter revenue of $1.5 million.

Lawsuits will probably account for 5% loss or something. How sick.

Hah, too much.
Its the parents job to parent thier kid's behavior, not Blizzard.

this is only going to make the gamers want more and play more. Human nature is to want what they can't have. So if you restrict it, you'll see people buying 2 computers with 2 accounts so they can play 6 hours...

I was addicted to a mmorpg called Ragnarok for a good 2 weeks until (luckily)the server went down. Then I stepped back and I said "oh hey, I have another life outside of this box." That was a while ago, and I usually game once a week on starcraft now. But as of yesterday I installed MTG online, and that could possibly take over my weekly starcraft.

The parents filed a suit against Blizzard Entertainment on Wednesday, saying their son jumped to his death while reenacting a scene from the game, the report said. The parents are backed by the anti-Internet addiction advocate Zhang Chunliang.

Uh...

There are no scenes in World of Warcraft, there is all of one cinematic within the game and no one jumps to there death in it.

When I see article like these usually I see it like the parents want an excuse for the death of the child, they don't want to put the blame where it is deserved, upon themselves. If a company makes a game that is fun and addictive are they at fault when people choose to play it non-stop? If a person can play a game and then go crazy and try to kill himself or someone else, I would venture to guess that they were messed up before they played the game.

Blizzard is aware that the game can be addicting and has tried to help, the rest state system encourages people to log off, as the more time you leave your character unplayed the more "Bonus" experience he gets. They have even recently released a Parental-Control system, that I don't think any other mmorpg has ever done.

A comic comes to mind from the intelligent people at Penny-Arcade, now there is a four letter word so if that offends you don't click, but I think it pretty much sums up what I think about these cases against the video game industry.

I would agree, but then were talking China here. I think the gaming situation over there is alot different then in western culture.

Heh, that's pretty ridiculous. Apparently the US isn't the only country where people try to pass the blames for theirs or others actions.

Why should blizzard be concerned about the addictive nature of their games? It's not like they're producing a physically addictive substance like pot or cigarettes. The individual is responsible for how much they play.

I would say that the question isn't so much is it fair but is it relevent and I would say that the answer is no. That kid obviously had issues. Just a thought but mabye the parents are trying to take the focus off their involvement by forcing the issue on Blizzard.

That whole thing with the government limiting it is yet another example of socialist government overstepping its bounds. Thank God that we live in countries where the government (more or less) keeps its hands out of our personal affairs.

Heh that's true but, I've only had the game for a week and a half, and already ive killed myself multiple times jumping or accidentally falling off ledges. It's like i have an urge to do it. Mabye that kid had the same thing as me. heh

gj parents, thats another reason why my parents pwn

I think the kid just had an accident and the parents tried searching for a reason for this and WoW was the best they could come up with. I suspect money was a motive O_o

What a bunch of horse manure !!

Parenting...its a tough job but if you decide to have children and, I have a 13 yo and 11 yo, its your job to raise them not somebody elses !!

You are responsible for your children and their actions !! No one else !!!
If you have to call the cops (and it happens !!) because your kid won't go to school or is out of control, you have failed !!

If your child ends his life, you missed something because you were not paying attention, nor listening to them.
Its sad but thats the way society is today...

Government is all to pervasive and people the world over are way to ready to blame someone else for their shortcomings !!

ah geeze this is becoming really really sad.
