Bitterness

Have you ever held something in your heart against someone? I know I have - whether it is a spouse, a parent, a child, a loved one, friends or even co-workers we are all prone to hold something in our hearts against someone.

Just a friendly reminder of the importance of making sure that you let go of all bitterness because it is poison to your soul.

I have suffered some tremendous hurts in my life but the following verses are extremely helpful for me when I struggle with bitterness:

Ephesians 4:31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

The truth is humanly speaking I can't get rid of that bitterness, I need to come to the cross and ask Jesus to deliver me from my own foolish pride.

What helps me the most is when I put it in perspective: Romans 5:10 tells us that we were once God's enemies, yet Christ died for us.

Let that soak in - we spit in the face of God prior to our salvation. Not because we wanted to, but because He first loved us, Christ reached into our lives and rescued us from the bitter hatred of God that we were caught up in because of sin.

Now Ephesians tells us to forgive as Christ forgave us - to forgive those who hurt us and spit in our face not even repenting of their actions or attitude. Only those in whom the Holy Spirit indwells can extend this kind of loving forgiveness.

So brother or sister I understand your struggle and pain, it's hard, but through Christ you can indeed find forgiveness and let go of the bitterness that you have towards others.

Solo Deo Gloria

Just like the elder brother in the story of the prodigal sons, how easy it is to be bitter when we see others "restored" without cause. Such is the enormous grace of God.

Thank you for the scripture and encouragement.

My struggle with bitterness...seems more pointed at myself. It is a real struggle, but I know the Overcomer.
