soooo........

I have like massive loans ive been paying back and done a fair amount of charitable giving and whatnot.... so its a bit different for me instead of just filing info from my W2 form.....

what would you say is the best process, H&R block, tax software, etc?

Depends on how massive the job is. Some tax software is pretty good, we have used one for years, Tax Cut, which I think is now H&R block. If you are going that way make sure you have all of the updates, and it doesn't hurt to spend for state and Federal. Electronic filing is a free process from the IRS, but what you pay for with the software doing it is the assurance and speed of it done right, worth it. If you have your own small business then start looking at a professional tax preparer. You could do it on paper yourself, but you may not find all of the ins and outs, and a pro preparer signing that you have had help from them, joins them with you on an audit. There is a free govt program for tax prep for those with a low income also, with free electronic filing thrown in. I didn't train with the program this year so I am uncertain of the income guide lines this year, check with your local social services office, or state employment bureau. Just a few guide lines from an old slow bear.

I have always used Turbo Tax and had no issues. Seems very thorough in finding deductions and I always get a nice phat check from the Govt each year. If you are doing a simple job with e-file I think its free for online only version. I pay for the small business one since I use 1099s and want to write off expenses.

I've been using TaxAct for years with the same results ewok has had - no problems.

I don't recall exactly how much money you have to give to registered charities or non-profit organizations to get a tax break, but I believe it was on the order of $2000 or more. I could be totally off base with that estimate, though.

Tek writing off donations and such depends if you have enough to go over the standard deduction that your filing status has.

You may be able to itemize this year because you recently bought a house.

BTW, I work for H & R Block during tax season and they are doing the 1040EZ form free this year as well as several reduced and fixed fees depending on your circumstances.

Been using TaxAct for years. Even had a few really difficult situations and it did great!

I started using Tax Cut (Now H&R Block At Home) after learning it's basically the same thing the guys down at H&R Block use in their office. After almost 15 years of using it,I've never had a problem.

It asks a lot of questions and give a lot of advice to help in those areas. It's helped me shape my donations and expenses to better manage my taxes. It's even helped me find a few things I didn't know about.

My biggest issue with H&R Block ANYTHING, is one year on the day my grandfather died, before he died, we went to do our taxes there to make it easier on us, not only was it hectic even with an appointment, but we asked how much it would cost, and they said $40...and when it was over, they charged us $350...for only a $1200 refund...and they said, oh we forgot to tell you about those fees... I will never have anything to do with that company again...
