Best media player for .MKV files?

It seems more and more fansub groups are moving from XviD (.AVI) to Matroska (.MKV) files.

I'm not thrilled with how VLC displays subtitles for .MKVs. Media Player Classic is okay, but I'm wondering if there's a better program out there.

So, what do you all think is the best media player for .MKV files?

Commercial software is right out and I'd prefer the program be open-source, but it's not strictly necessary.

Oh, and I'm running Windows XP SP2.

Vibro - I downloaded and tried MPlayer last night, and you're correct it is a decent player. But, I did notice that I had to activate the subs with every video file I opened.

But, let's try this one on for size, what's the best media player to play MKV, AVI and all the other codecs as well as allowing for EASY screen captures?

The closest one there is kaffeine, but you will have fun getting that to run on anything but linux :\

i cant figure out how to activate subtitles on my mac

I keep having issues with the sound getting unsynced to the subs with every player I use, with every show I watch lately. Except Naruto. But Nabari no Ou and Geass R2 both are kinda unbearable for me to watch. Would the Codec Sniper work? I have a TON of codecs apparently and I don't know which are safe to remove.
