Avatar file sizes

Man. I just looked at LionOfJudah's avatar. 234,653 bytes. No joke.

I checked a few other avatars on the forums and, well, they're huge. I mean, in terms of file size. I wanted to post a quick Public Service Announcement asking all members to review their avatars and give some steps to shrinking file size.

1. Resize the image. If your avatar is larger than 128x128 off-site and 64x64 on-site, you need to resize it. (I'm looking at you, Bowser.)

2. Re-save the image with tighter compression. I recommend using IrFanView for the job. It's free, it's easy, and it's excellent.

3. If your avatar is an animated .GIF, consider saving it as a static JPG or clipping a few frames. When someone on dial-up has to load a 200K+ avatar, it does not produce warm, fuzzy feelings.

4. Consider changing your avatar to something smaller, filesize-wise. There are plenty of great avatars out there online and many great freeware programs you can use to make your own.

Also, if you need a place to host your avatar, please go to ImageShack. Why? Because they're free (again, very important) and they allow direct linking. No more "This image is hosted by Angelfire!" nonsense.

So, I'm going to give everyone about a week to re-size their own avatars before I start doing it for them. In all cases, I will keep the original image and use one of the first three methods posted above to help bring down the file size.

And no, I'm not planning to change the off-site avatar size back to 64x64. Ember has a nice, shiny avatar at full-size that only consumes 5,613 bytes. (I mention hers because I made it and used the "Save for web" option in Photoshop to minimize the file size. *G*) It's all about compression, ladies and gentleman.

NOTE: I know there are very few users on dial-up these days but even if we were all on broadband, there's no need for humongous avatar files. Following the first guideliness posted above should help those pages load more quickly.

Mine is only 15k in size, and is 128px in width. Would you like me to resize it?

Oops. My bad. It was showing as a larger size in IrFanView because it automatically zooms in on images to increase visibility.

Still, re-saving the image in IrFanView at 80% JPG compression brought it down to 4.70KB.

max size is 128x128.. i would suggest that loj's isnt that huge, but it would still retain the same filesize under reduction as its an offsite link.

Me and HCS will check into if you can stop it resizing large images so that a 128x128 image is actually restricted to 128x128

mine was 20kb was that too much?? (changed it now no avatar

tek don't forget sigs ;)

edit: not looking at you and pointing it out rizz..in fact members like u should be the only ones to have one...let members earn it.

.seek.

my sig is 40k and my avatar is 12k so its still not a huge lot... though if everyone does it we may start having problems.

i just made my new sig

running it off photobucket is a nice idea. It takes bearly any space in website and i can use it for other forums and such. just did a new avatar, simple really.

my sig reports 46kb if anyone wonders.

Alrighty. I worked the Photoshop magic with a few more avatars and signatures. Here are the results:

Rizz
Original avatar file size: 24,379 bytes

Uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/rizzspray-p.jpg

Original signature file size: 41,582 bytes
Re-saved using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature: 8,899 bytes

FlashoN
Original avatar file size: 26,551 bytes
Re-saved using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature: 2,105 bytes
Uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/yy-p.jpg

Original signature file size: 47,520 bytes
Re-saved using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature: 12,685 bytes
Uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/sigf-p.jpg

Corpfox
Original avatar file size: 48,017 bytes
Cropped, re-sized, and re-saved using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature: 8,148 bytes
Uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/uploaded_SC2-640-p.jpg

EDIT: FlashoN, Corpfox: I took the liberty of editing your forum account to point to the new avatar and signatures. You likely won't notice a difference, visually.

Rizz: I thought you may want to host the re-saved images on your web space, so I left your stuff alone. ^^

LoJ: I took the liberty of creating a new avatar for you. I used a frame the original movie of you catching the shark on Sega Marine Fishing, cropped it, re-sized it, and used Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature.

Your previous avatar was 234,653 bytes AND it's still available at http://img34.photobucket.com/albums/v103/lambofwrath777/loj.gif

Your new avatar is 5,051 bytes and uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/100_0691-p.jpg

Your alternate avatar, which proves that you caught the 114.84 kg Shortfin Mako, has been uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/100_0691-p-alt.jpg

And, if neither of those suit your fancy, there's always the simple yet elegant Dreamcast fishing rod. ^^

Last vic--err, client of the day: Phix.

Original avatar file size: 13,045 bytes
Tek-ified avatar file size: 1,442 bytes
Uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/uploaded_phixav-p.jpg

Original signature file size: 37,860 bytes
Tek-ified signature file size: 8,557 bytes
Uploaded to http://www.cgalliance.org/iB_html/uploads/woophixcopy2-p.jpg

That's all for today, folks. Remember, be responsible and keep your avatar and signature image file sizes as low as possible! If you've got Photoshop, use the "Save for Web" feature. If you don't have a copy of PS, go nab IrFanView and tweak the file.

You could of asked, and I could of re-done/re-size my avatar, and save you all the trouble for doing that hard work...

Very nice though, bigger than I expected...
