August 22-24 Free Weekend Event

To give all gamers a chance to check out the new gameplay introduced in "The Heavy" update, Valve will be running a Team Fortress 2 Free Weekend via Steam, a leading online platform for the delivery and management of PC games. The Free Weekend is open to gamers the world over and scheduled to begin Friday, August 22 at 11 am PDT.

What say we schedule an event on our servers to coincide with the upcoming Free Weekend event?
 
I can't make it, I'm going home this weekend...which I think has happened for *every* free TF2 weekend so far. :P

BTW, what do you guys think of the new arena game type? I'm intrigued...it sounds like DM on small maps...with a capture point? Not sure I get it, but ...I'm interested.
 
I like arena so far. I'm mostly happy about getting new textures to play with in Hammer though. xP

I haven't played arena enough to give a definitive opinion yet but so far I don't like it. I actually don't mind sitting on spec but it seems unbalanced to all the classes. Typically classes like the spy will die more than others in TF2 games so they aren't the greatest choice for arena. Also many players will die from a sentry at least once before learning it's exact location. Since you can only die once that makes sentries much more deadly. In general it feels like the game mode is just sudden death for the whole round, that's not exactly a new mode. Having new textures is good though :) .

I do like both of the new maps Badwater and Steel. Steel is probably the best non-valve made map I've played. Quite frankly while fastlane and turbine are ok maps they really don't bring anything new to gameplay while Steel does and does it well.

Also Valve just sent me a free guest pass for TF2 that expires on the on August 21 (as in the same day they sent it). If they are going to have a free weekend anyway what is the logic in that ???

See the free weekend does not require a pass (didn't last time and no mention of needing one on the link). That is why I am wondering what the point is in sending me a free pass with an August 21 expiration on August 21 just before they are having a free weekend on August 22. In fact It would actually be better for me to send other people the link because the link is good through the 24th and the pass is not. I guess it's just a marketing gimmick to get players to advertise for Valve.

re: Arena....ah, so it *is* sudden death. That's definitely something I'm interested in, I think it makes for a more strategic game 'cuz people will play more carefully knowing they only have one life to live. Reminds me of playing Capturestrike in Threewave CTF for Quake 3.
 
Arena, I've only played once and it's alright I suppose. I really don't care for Steel, basically for one reason, I don't like that defensive team has to run around the map to get to the final cap to defend it once killed. It's like you get one shot at a defense then the offense just has to pratically watch one direction for the defending team to come try and take it back.
