Are my games immoral?

Over the years, I seem to have stockpiles games for my xbox 360, and I was saved about a year ago. As I move on just about each day I think I'm doing something wrong, so I was hoping to get an opinion if it is okay to play the games I play.
Here we go :D
Far Cry 2
The Orange Box
Halo 1-3
Mecanaries 2
Call Of Duty 2 and 4
Mass Effect
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Star Wars Kotor 1 and 2
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Star Wars The Force Unleashed
And finally Gears Of War 2
I also plan on getting Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead, so opinions on those would be nice
Also one more question, I'm pretty sure magic and sex in gaming is bad, but is there any other indicators that the I shouldn't play said game?
Thank you and God bless

Its only immoral if you do those acts; Steal a car, murder someone, beat someone to pulp or death, etc.

A lot of people play World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, and that has tons of magic.

The actual magic would be like demonic magic, or magic directly offensive to religion, like Diablo 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic.

No comment on the Sex part.

Fallout 3 is not bad. In this game, you can do in good way or bad way, but as a christian, we have to choose good acts instead. I never chose dark side in Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic part 1 and 2. The word, 'magic', seem confusing to me. I prefer to say supernatural power, and it is just a game as long as you don't use it for evil, and for demon powers in game, yeah, that could be problem because how can anyone use demon powers for good? Devils will never share power, and if they do, they will make you do evil instead (likely possessed human body). Lightning, Fire, Arcane, and so forth, seem okay if use them for good. This stuff is tough to judge. I wouldn't do that for real since it is just a game just like it is just a movie, and they're fiction entertainment.

Unless you are playing games meant for a very young audience virtually all games contain immorality. Language, sex, and morals conversely opposite of the Christian faith are a large part of all media. We really can't expect anything different when most games are created from a secular, humanistic, Taoist or Shinto-Buddhist view points. However there is no reason to single out games from any other media be it movies or the internet. If you want to determine whether you should be involved with a specific piece of media I'd ask myself the following things for starters...

Ask God about it (pray). It's not only asking if it's something you should be putting before your eyes but asking if this is something God would want me to spend his money on supporting. Just because you can avoid looking at a certain part of a game doesn't mean anything to developers as you are still buying the game. Our purchases shape what type of media is going to be made in the future and by that shape people.

What does the Bible say about it's content?

Will it cause me to sin? I've had problems with hearing a cuss word repeated incessantly and because of it I find those words coming to mind when I am searching for something to say sometimes. In the case of sex if you are buying a game knowing it will cause you to lust after a woman (even virtual) in your heart than it's a sin.

Ask follow Christians their opinions (hey you've got that covered :) ). Of course what God says directly is always much more important but it's good to ask others in case you've overlooked something. It's one thing to ask strangers though and another to ask people who are close to you. If you can talk to people like your mother and father about a piece of media without fear/shame it may be a good sign it's ok.

Nothing of this world is perfect don't expect to find any media without flaws. Ask not only what is negative about a game but what am I getting that is positive reinforcement. In my opinion of Team Fortress 2 it does have a few words that I deem inappropriate and as it is an online game I've been exposed to some users' perverse content (going online is like going out in the world :/). On the positive side I find the violence non-realistic and not in an immoral context (I'm not playing a criminal/bad guy). I get to game with a group of Christians which I cannot do with some online games as many do not have substantial Christian groups. In addition the game reinforces teamwork and sacrifice to win more so than many other multiplayer games.

Having said that be aware that the general mindset in today's culture is to be all inclusive. Allowing everything good and bad in a game is not acceptable because even if it has positive content that does not mean it negates the bad. The paradox is if sin is shown to have an agreeable outcome sin becomes just as attractive to people as good (or more so because it's often easier). However if that sin does not have an agreeable outcome who would want to play that path, thus what is the use putting it in a game? As Christians we should be working towards being better than we are so our money should go towards games that encourage people likewise.

In final if you are having doubts about any game I'd say avoid it. It is just a game after all and the day we can't live without a piece of entertainment is the day we need to step back and look at our priorities.

(Note: CGA is a Christian "Gaming" forum so don't think you are getting an unbiased opinion. It's kind of like walking into a saloon and asking if the people there think liquor is ok :p . To be fair you may want to ask some non-gaming Christians their opinions in addition. In the end the choice is between you and God not anyone else though.)

(Another Note: If you play x-box you may want to check out Toj's www.toj.cc X-box group and their forum section http://www.cgalliance.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=69 .)

I think it goes beyond this. Jesus said..."21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire."

It is not that only that you physically beat someone to a pulp but if you entertain those thoughts in your heart you have already committed the act. It is ALL about the heart condition, and this applies to Video Games as well. Let the Holy Spirit guide you and watch out for where your heart is as you are playing the games.

One of the things that differentiates Christianity from the old testament faith is that our faith is based on the rational application of Christs sacrifice rather than on a set of rules and regulations. In other words there is no real prescription here rather your actions should be determined by your rational application of what Christs sacrifice means for what you do, how you act, and what you think. This should obviously be guided by your reading and understanding of the bible and by your relationship with your own and wider Christian community. What is does not mean is that anyone can come here and so no or yes to your question it depends on your situation. I mean how old are (rhetorical question please don't answer) what does that say about what you should be playing. What effect does you playing these games have on you, what effect does it have on those around you. Is there a specific genre that troubles you, or do all games worry you.

N.T. Wright compares the age we live in now to a non-existent missing 5th act in a five act Shakespeare play. Say we find the first four acts of a newly discovered Shakespeare play unfortunately the 5th act was destroyed and thus we do not know how the play progresses. However, we do have access to the other works of Shakespeare as well as the storyline from the first four acts thus a Shakespeare expert should be able to recreate the 5th act with some degree of accuracy.

The bible, in this metaphor, represents the first four acts that we have access to and can read. The age we live in now is like the fith act that we dont have access to. Thus we are all like Shakespeare experts who must try to live out our lives in this new and very different age by rationally applying the word of God written 2000 years age to our lives today.

In light of this I would say use your rationality and your knowledge of your particular situation, talk to others who know you and decide for yourself what you should be doing :)

Well, through prayer I came to a conclusion that I felt Gears Of War 2 wasn't settling right in me, but I feel that Fallout 3 will be ok, so I am trading in so I can get Fallout 3. Thank you all for the opinions :D

How much are you looking for your GoW2? Someone on CGA might pay more than you can get for the trade in... that someone could be me!
