APPLE special conference in 8 minutes!

On a further note, the only thing this thing really looks practical for, is for a hand held gaming device.

you would be forced to play a limited number of games. 1GHz Processor really cuts it, and its Apple which means most PC games won't work. And does it even have a CD drive? It would only be able to play Steam-purchased games I guess.

I just learned about it today, read about it today, and I'm thoroughly disappointed. It looks cool, and I really like the idea, but this doesn't meet the needs of a tablet-like computer.

I know for some people, this tech is really going to be nice. I image people in the photo industry being able to immediately present photos for review to clientèle being one and I'm sure there will be even more. IF the thing could run my companies software...I might be interested too.

Aww!

/me hands Joshinator a tissue

I didn't say that all Apple product users were arrogant. I just said that Apple fosters a user culture of arrogance in their marketing and advertising. Look no further than their Mac v. PC ads and Steve Jobs' keynote speeches for proof.

Not to get into a big Apple hitting parade, but I used to be a big Apple fan, until I went to work for them and saw all the inner workings...and the crap they don't tell their customers...but I guess this is probably true with M$ as well...

But on another note, I have an "iTouch" and I love it...but I do prefer to be the one in "control" of my computer and hardware...limiting my upgrading options is very FTL...stop trying to control your product...give Apple users some freedom...

I would like to be able to install mac on my pc hardware, without having to hack the OS in any way.

ryanb the ipad runs the same os as the iphone which is a slmmed down osx.

Thanks for clarifying this, what I really meant is - I'd expect a full version of OSX in a tablet, not a large iPod. Being able to run anything from the app store library on a full copy of OSX would have actually been worth something...especially if you had a camera/mic for chat or at least a USB port.

On a further note, the only thing this thing really looks practical for, is for a hand held gaming device.

1.5 pounds doesn't sounds like much to hold, but it will get heavy pretty fast. Plus you can't really hold it and play...how woud you touch the screen? What will end up happening is it will sit on your lap or something while you drag your thumbs around. The other thing is - it isn't portable enough. A lot of people buy the DS over the PSP because the older PSPs didn't fit in their pockets.

All bashing aside, I wouldn't predict this product line will fail. Many Apple faithful will pick up this "magical" device anyway, and Steve will bestow a camera or other obviously missing featues in version 2 which will start at $399. As for me, I'll be on my sub-notebook. :)

Apple devices don't fail. If it does start to fail, apple will release version two, with OSX, multitasking, and a 2ghz dual core cpu asap.

Yup,this is pretty true...although I will say I haven't exactly seen much from the Macbook Air. To me it sounds like most of the legitimate complaints here could be said about the 1st gen iPhone. I think the difference is that...3 years ago, there weren't really any great smartphones. To be completely honest, I believe that most of what made the phone useful was the Google apps.

When I look at something like the iPad (I feel weird even saying that), I think about how netbooks and ultra-compacts have been around for a while now, and I just can't see the use here other than as a really fancy D&D board. I'm sure some smart developers will figure out good uses for it, but it's just frustrating to see so many things left out of a device in 2010. I'm looking forward to see what the courier has in store.

ROFL!!!! You're kidding right? I've almost been able to start a second company on folks calling me about hardware issues with the macs. OSX is a great piece of software but guess what a mac is now? It's a pc with a different firmware on the motherboard...that's it.

However apple in their arrogance has done some stupid things that effectively removed the built in security of BSD:

Considering the walled garden you live in with an apple product Microsoft even with it's problems is for more attractive than apple if you just take the apple supplied glasses off.

It's the superiority complex that causes problems. Apple seems to believe that they are infinitely superior than their users.

This isn't a criticism restricted to Apple, either. This kind of attitude birthed Vista, for instance.

The attitude manifests itself as a company saying "We know all of the different ways in which a user should use our product, and any other way of using it is bad." It means that emergent behavior is wrong and should be suppressed.

Like I said, Apple is not unique to have this attitude. But I'd much rather buy a product from a company that saw emergent behavior as positive.

I don't think he's referring to hardware/software failure. I think hes referring to market failure, and I agree with him to a point. Fashion accessories are fashion accessories, and that won't change. Obviously I'm not saying that of all Apple users, just saying there is enough of them that it's very hard for a niche product to "fail" with a niche crowd.

It's an oversized ipod touch with pretty much the same limitations as the ipod touch... This article sums up my opinion very well..:)
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/opinion/1589247/ipad

The problem is that it has the same limitations...and more. I can stick an iPod Touch in my pocket. You won't see kids lugging iPads around school. You won't see people jogging with an iPad strapped to their arm. The cost here is much more prohibitive. I do think there are some applications for a much larger screen...like a digital game board or interacting with customers like mentioned above. I suppose only time will tell. :)

Another useless piece of Apple excrement.

The most useful thing of theirs I would buy is the iPod touch, 8gb version.

Almost $1000 for the high end model iPad. LOL. Just get a netbook.
